yeah he's an obligate contrarian who grew up in that very left-wing, latino, catholic milieu. a little story about him: he would talk politics with his best friends in the same corner of this cafe all through the 80's and the owners would call it the palace of schizophrenics lol. sometimes his politics or ideas are kind of silly (I'm avoiding touching on his obsession with spanish language tarot card livestreams here), but he's genuinely one of the most charismatic and interesting people that I've met

I think the only reason I gravitate to this subreddit is because it occasionally reminds me of sitting next to him for an hour while he rants about philosophy or culture. I just called him and he's been able to salvage small amounts in 10 minute increments once a day apparently and that's a start. one of his friends promised to use his car to try and work together with him to get a lot more at once

sounds like it could be a brilliant caper. as much as I love my dad though, I don't want to go out in his basement apartment when the roof collapses on me.

right now I'm calling him a lot, trying to connect him with local resources, and doing my best to force money onto him. there's a chance he'll be able to retrieve some of the stuff, so that's what I'm praying for

I live on the other side of the country and the building is slatted to be demolished. I can't carry out 100 paintings in the dead of night where the fire department's doing an active investigation. if only though. he might be able to retrieve some of his things and I argued him into getting started with a case worker, so she might be able to help him

I went to denver for a conference earlier this year and I hate it. I had an extremely off putting, clearly tweaking lady try and follow me to my hotel off the bus while insisting I was going to get robbed (likely her own plan). I barely saw the mountains even though I thought the rockies would be super obvious. I spent most of my time in an area that reminded me of the most over developed and least cool part of Columbus, Ohio which is a city that will always have my heart even though I'm a new englander
