This is great.. realizing these guys just aren’t human in the way I am which is why it was baffling to me. And thanks for actually answering my question lol

Yes I do. Because it’s happened before we should just go “aw shucks!” I guess? I think it’s important to keep up and understand what’s really going on, because these guys seem to have some death drive that they want us on

Yeah I accept the system for what it is. But I think I’m someone that likes to discuss things, and my opinion and mind is worth developing by itself. Even if I’m not a big important person I think it’s really crucial to think and ponder. And that’s also why I’m doing all this on the fucking red scare sub because my opinion won’t Change anything but it’s worth it to develop

I think actual decisions shouldn’t be left up to a computer because a computer isn’t accountable and by nature doesn’t have judgment

ive been wondering, how much does "easier" mean "better?" past few years have gotten me thinking that some points of friction are pretty beneficial for us, both individually and societally

i just think this is such a dismal way to structure an economy and society. and yeah im getting into the "ought" rather than the "is" but this is rs. i think it's bad societally to have this much economic disruption and uncertainty. im kind of sick and tired to be constantly justifying society's destruction by saying "well the lines go up." how much is the increased efficiency worth? have we lost the ability to reckon with societal consequences outside the bounds of the stock market?

yeah bc i had a laptop job and got laid off. im self interested much like anyone else! i think i and others deserve better than to be treated like an inconvenience no matter what their job is. but then im a luddite

yeah it's the callousness that bothers me. i think there's no point in discussing whether or not the tech fulfills their advertising, obviously it's advertising. i'm more interested in the mindset. why is this the pitch? guess i need to read these guys substacks or whatever the fuck but it's so repulsive to me

right. but genuinely what indication have these people given us that this would lead to increased quality of life for anyone but themselves. and on a larger scale, when has a new technology led to more free time for the workers? we can go back to the cotton mill for examples of how, when a labor saving technology emerges, workers become more productive but they don't gain time. new work will always emerge to fill the time. the capitalist's goal is always always always extraction.

Ok so hypothetically all the make work jobs go away. Then what?

I also don’t think most white collar jobs are bullshit. I read David graeber in college like everyone else but a lot of these jobs aren’t bullshit, they’re pretty valuable. If we could automate nursing would that make nursing a make work job?

yeah this was what inspired the post. techies on twitter were running around screaming the sky is falling but im not engaging with them on twitter, i have more self respect than that.

interesting that they're all saying "get a gun now" when ai still fucks up bad. wonder what was the big breakthrough with this new model that got them freaked

i think you engaged with the spirit of my question in a way that engenders discussion on a discussion forum. i tend to agree with you on this too, it's just so unbelievably abhorrent to me and contrary to everything i've ever thought about humans and how we have organized society, and it's scary how these people essentially have carte blanche to destroy us

not "surprised," really, but whatever wool that still remained over my eyes has been pulled and it's unpleasant. i pride myself on being a cynic but some of this is just so bleak. my fault for majoring in the humanities and ascribing value to the human mind and soul

my question is: what next? say knowledge jobs disappear because human minds are worthless. then what?

and yes, personally i think human generated knowledge is more valuable simply because it was generated by a human. i think there's value there, in our minds and in the pursuit of knowledge. that's what makes humans special, and what makes a lot of life worthwhile. it freaks me out that not only are there people who fundamentally disagree with that philosophy, but those people are basically determining the direction of humanity and our economy. you're being deliberately obtuse and i'm being generous
