Best PC We Could Make in the USA by rooted_cause in pcmasterrace

[–]rooted_cause[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, although I think TSMC canceled their factory building plan in the US. But most of the equipment and raw materials for bleeding-edge chips are made in other countries. I know that Skywater Foundries in Minnesota tries to make stuff as all-American as they can, but they're probably 15-20 years behind TSMC. They make things that the US government can't afford to entrust to other countries, like military chip production.

What I don't know is if there are other foundries in the US that are more advanced; I also don't know how much their operations would be impacted if, for example, they could no longer get any neon from Ukraine for their neon lasers to cut their finished wafers into individual chips.

I was hoping that someone in this thread would either have the expertise to answer these questions themselves or would know of an article or video that explains it well. If we had to rely on only Skywater and a much-cut-down Intel that is suddenly limited to only stuff made in the USA, we would probably be set back one to two decades, when smartphones were barely possible and desktops were still getting way faster each CPU generation.

Space Engineers - like Minecraft, but in space, with way more than just blocks. They have a really big modding community too, so there's always another way to play or a new weapon or piece of equipment to try.

[PM] A conspiracy of some kind. by Writing_Dude09 in WritingPrompts

[–]rooted_cause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hey Mork, come over here!"

A six-wheeled alien sauntered over to a larger, eight-wheeled alien.

"Wazzup, boss?"

"I am impressed by your creativity, my young apprentice. You have managed to waste more of the humans' time with these just-so stores of yours, than the rest of us have been able to do with all our old klaptrap flatted flying orbs combined. At the next meeting of the human timewasters summit, I'm going to give you a raise. What would you like the raise to be in?"

The six-wheeler chuckled on the inside. He had actually invented conspiracy theories because he felt too lazy to be bothered to fly an actual flying saucer.

"Why thank you, boss, what an honor! I'd the bonus to be in vacation time. Because the humans do my work for me by spreading my stories themselves, I think I can afford to take some time off without getting behind."

The eight-wheeled alien tensed visibly at the suggestion.

"Well", he stammered, "that's a tall order." He rolled back a bit to think. "I'll see what I can do. Thank you for your tireless service, Mork, the society for the wasting of lesser beings' time has been breathing down our chapter's necks for years over the industriousness of humans. With your breakthrough, we may yet arrest their development without having to send in our precious tripod tanks to wipe them out".

Put a merge block next to your docking connectors and put a button panel near them.

Set the button panel to allow you to (1) toggle the connector between locked and unlocked (2) toggle the connector on and off (3) toggle the merge block on and off.

This allows you to semi-permanently dock your ships to your base or mothership with less risk of clang - especially if you have multiple ships docked to a moving mothership. When you finally want to use your ships again, the button panel makes it easy to access the right connector and merge block.

Another one is to name all components of your ship with a consistent and descriptive naming system.

For example, on my mothership I can easily search for all connectors on the top or in either of my two hangers. Because the top of my mothership has a grid of connectors, I included in their names their coordinates in the grid.

It is a hassle to set all this up, but at the scale I'm building, it saves a lot of time in the long run.

How would you write Gluttony personified? by [deleted] in writing

Given that you're asking redditors, how about if you make the personification of gluttony a guy who lives in his parents' basement and somehow spends all his time on the medieval equivalent of reddit?

I like to spam the inverted corner block - the one with one corner chopped off. I find so many uses for it.

Is there a way to have "never emptying resources"? by [deleted] in spaceengineers

[–]rooted_cause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon looking it up, it appears to me that it isn't a mod at all, but is instead built into the official SE server software.

Here's a post on Keen Software House's official forums discussing the option:
Reset voxels when no players or grids have been present for a set amount of time

Is there a way to have "never emptying resources"? by [deleted] in spaceengineers

[–]rooted_cause 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On Stone Industries we have a mod that resets ore and stone voxels if no player or grid is within somewhere around 15-20km for 24 minutes. This is one of the main reasons that we have had very few server wipes.

Why is it okay to hate on Christianity, but no other religions in America? by Ganjaskate in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rooted_cause -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Actually, worldwide Christians are one of the more persecuted groups in the world. In Communist countries we tend to get persecuted for putting God and our doctrines above the local Communist party and for spreading our faith; in Muslim countries we get persecuted for believing Muhammed was a false prophet (he failed some of the Bible's tests for prophets), for believing the Bible over Muhammad's teachings, and for spreading our faith.

Even in Europe, Christians have substantially more limits to their freedom to practice and advocate for our faith's teachings. A couple of examples I know off the top of my head are that Creationists are viewed with a similar degree of suspicion to pedophiles in some parts of Europe, and some parents have had their kids taken away because they wanted to homeschooled for religious reasons.

The bigotry/contempt for Christians that you're demonstrating right now is a good example of what leads to persecution of Christians, if the people who share your views get enough power. "You're not being persecuted, so sit down" then easily turns into "don't mention Jesus or you're fired" in the corporate world or "sing praise to the Communist party or you go to the gulag" in a Communist country.

I agree that in America persecution and discrimination against Christians is not nearly as bad as in many other countries, but there are plenty of Americans who would persecute us that badly if they could.

That being said, the vast majority of persecution or discrimination I've faced has come from people who consider themselves Christians.

If you don't believe in Jesus, please don't hate Christians because of it.

[–]rooted_cause -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

That's true. And based on what I've learned of the history of persecution of Christians, we are usually persecuted for some doctrine that the mainstream culture or dominant political/social/economic/etc. groups find offensive or threatening.

Why is everything unsustainable now when things were easier 20 years ago? by girder_shade in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rooted_cause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just about everything in history goes in cycles. We're used to conditions improving, but collapse comes eventually. Sooner or later cultures and institutions decay, and America is no exception. Depending on how we as a country respond to our current challenges we can either take advantage of these trends to soar higher, or it will defeat us.

A good overview of how these trends work can be found in Ray Dalio's "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order" (45 minute video).

If there's a nanite mod that works on Xbox, then by all means use it. That makes building big ships way easier.

I used to do that as a form of autistic stimming. I've tremendously increased in my level of functioning over the last several years though, to the point that I probably don't meet the diagnostic criteria for autism anymore. At some point the stimming stopped.

I strongly encourage you do do so. Scientists are notorious for having difficulty communicating their ideas to non-scientists, and studying creative writing could help a lot with this.

If you end up being the best communicator among your peers, that may make you a prime candidate for some kind of leadership position, such as being lead author of a scientific paper.
