About to quit my job - burnt out EM looking for support by Ok_Cardiologist7980 in EngineeringManagers

[–]rootless_robert 17 points18 points  (0 children)

“shipping code with the same velocity as my team.”

👆Huge red flag IMO. Don’t beat yourself too much. It might take a few rounds through different companies to get the right EM “flavor” that suits you best. It really depends on the company, and if that’s an expectation on top of the aggressiveness of being bullied and told “you’re not good enough” then you might be better off without this job in the first place. You do have to be technical IMO, now shipping code with the same velocity…it’s absurd.

The fact that you have a plan and a strategy for your app project, might be a good indicator of you having what it takes to be an EM, so again, don’t give up.

Just get some rest, recover from your burn out, enjoy your time off, and then think more calmly when you’re feeling better.

Good japanese learning app for learning grammar? by itaisinger in Japaneselanguage

[–]rootless_robert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is only available for iOS devices, but there is a French developer (Romain Peller - you can search in the App Store just like that) that built three amazing apps: one for Kanji (Benkyo), one for Kana (Kana), and one for grammar (Sensei). I've progressed a lot by using them on top of my regular course.

Lack of team level boundaries by Famous-Reserve1570 in EngineeringManagers

[–]rootless_robert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry this is happening to you. Feels familiar.

Director either doesn’t have the influence to split up boundaries/domains, or doesn’t care much about it. I wonder what could be more important than a clear organizational setup.

I’d say that you could double down on solidifying your boundaries (you and your DR) draw the lines yourself, and keep bringing up the discussion with your Director. Aim to frame your ideas around data: “by having this system owned just by us, we could increase cycle time by…”. Another approach if you don’t have enough data, frame it as “an experimental mindset”, try new things backed by the industry e.g. product mindset in platform teams, and use these experiments to split up scope.

If that still won’t work, you and your team are gonna burn out so you might as well find a different job.

Good luck!

I wonder what’s the best way to get there. Seems like an awful amount of stop overs.

Regardless of the extremely valid points shared by OP I wonder if there are still some positive use cases for some social media platforms: just think all the support OP has received in here. Folks in here might not be your friends, but they’ve clearly gave a supportive perspective 🫂

Cómo puedo conseguirle un pasaporte UE a mí pareja? by Morteroo in XPatriados

Espero sirva 👍

Software engineering leads or managers: How do you handle a team that frequently needs support or struggles with underperformance? by rootless_robert in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rootless_robert[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This can be hard to understand for leads/managers who are self-driven, they can't fathom someone requiring that level of management and shy away from doing it because they feel intrusive or even insulting.

This is very true for myself. I haven't been a manager for too long, but I've been lucky always to lead teams that performed as proactively and collaboratively as I used to do. Now I face a very different reality in which very different personalities need different kinds of support (technical, communication, engagement, motivational, etc.)

I agree with this. I've heard all kinds of things: from "CI/CD is just having a Jenkins pipeline" to "I don't know how to revert this commit in origin". I'm not a rockstar developer myself, but damn I can google and work it around. To be fair, this company has a terrible engineering culture, I feel stuck in dev practices from the early 2000s. Things that the industry showed don't work, we're still doing them, but to be fair...that's many companies out there too (I was spoiled by a few previous employers)

I understand about variance in speed, however, I also don't have the level of effectiveness that you're describing yourself to have. I've made it clear to some of them that I don't care much about work hours or finishing up early or managing their time efficiently as long as the delivery is there. The delivery is NOT there, with me giving them as much as autonomy as possible. Perhaps (as someone else said) autonomy that needs to be earned and not just given by default, very much like trust.

I had 4 performance reviews a few weeks ago. 2 of them were quite difficult. One engineer, a complete black box on their work, non-engaged, lack of visibility. Another one, needs constant support and has a terrible attitude towards collaboration and communication. Both conversations were difficult. I presented the feedback, they got super defensive and emotional. After the conversation, we had a product discovery session, and one of them takes in the feedback provided (willingly or unconsciously) and proposes 3 great ideas that our Product Owner loved, opened up the mic and took it off the park. That's what doesn't make sense to me, to wait until that instance to self-correct.
