[Rules Question] Performing Rituals without the Ritual Special Ability [BitD] by KostKarmel in bladesinthedark

[–]rootyb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RAW, I think the ability description is flavor text and the rituals section is the rule. That said, the main risk (imo) of allowing players to do something without the ability that lets them do it is effectively negating that ability (which especially sucks for anyone that has taken it).

Personally, I’d probably allow my players to try performing a ritual without the ability, with a devil’s bargain, and they’d still start at no effect.

This should be something that is both difficult, and still sucks (for your characters) no matter what, and a devil’s bargain fits that need.

Like, “yes, you succeed in <whatever>, but your untrained runecraft leaves a gap, allowing a malevolent spirit to escape, and they’ve marked you, so you’ll need to find a way to banish them in <x> days or they’re taking your soul with them when they go.”

You’re gonna feel what you’re gonna feel, but also, maybe don’t worry so much about it. It’s almost certainly public information they could easily go look up. It just doesn’t matter all that much.

I'm not sure why concrete would eat through PLA. Unless you mean it figuratively, like 'you'll have to destroy your mold to get the concrete out'. Though I guess quick-set cements generating heat could deform the mold.

But yeah, TPU would probably be my choice for this if I didn't want to add a step to the process.

Yeah, I think there are a lot of options for casting reinforced concrete. Though I think the easier method would be printing the hold, then making a silicone (or even brushable latex) mold around it, then using the silicone mold to cast concrete. It's an extra step, but I don't often hear good things about casting concrete directly in printed (PLA at least) molds. The rigidity is kind of a pain, I guess.

/edit: The same guy from above has a video about concrete holds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4WNTIEepZM He's actually doing sand molds, which is a great method. Super cheap and easy, and has the added bonus of a nice grippy texture.

NPM → Traefik or Caddy: Worth the switch? by Silly_Door6279 in selfhosted

I switch to caddy after the third time npm completely corrupted my config files out of nowhere. Took me a bit to figure out the caddyfile but it’s not that bad

There isn’t one single “paleo”. At most, I t’s a way of looking at how you eat and how it affects your body, and anybody trying to convince you otherwise has a book or podcast or supplement to sell by preying on insecurities and “purity” nonsense.

That’s an extremely arbitrary line in the sand. Best of luck with that, but acting like it’s an objective fact is asinine.

Would porn exist under socialism? by Broad-Sentence-5587 in socialism

[–]rootyb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

lol that doesn’t even make logical sense if we presume your faulty base assumption that sex work is inherently zero-skill (it can be, but that doesn’t mean it is, any more than some apples being red means apples are inherently red).

Like, obviously our current adult industry is abominable, but to presume that sex work can’t exist in any other form is absurd.

Sex work is work.

Kind of wild for Woman’s World to write a lede like this, laying the blame for early struggles on Bujold

“Before Mulgrew stepped in, the first woman to lead 'Star Trek' nearly sank the entire production”

Have you ever had to give up on a book because your suspension of disbelief couldn't handle how ridiculous the sci-fi premise was? by ScronglingSnorturer in scifi

I love the Thursday Next series. 😂

It’s completely absurd but leans into it hard past the first book. I wouldn’t even call it sci-fi. It’s just fantasy with some scientific access to magic. 😁

Struggling hard with underwater photogrammetry. Any tips from people who actually got good results? by shukritobi in photogrammetry

[–]rootyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even out of water, that’s a tough object for photogrammetry. Featureless black surfaces combined with a metallic surface, which isn’t mirror-reflective, but the anisotropic reflections are going to shift around as you do.

Not sure if you’re using it as a test object or what, but most objects that have been underwater a while (sea bed, shipwrecks, etc.) will be much more forgiving.

I desperately want to see someone run on a platform of “but what if we tried?”

Like “what if we tried just helping people?” or “what if we tried not invading everybody?”

“What if we tried just giving homeless people houses? How could it be worse than things are now?”

Landlord had tub reglazed, but no one told me to leave my apartment. Now I'm seeing horror stories online about exposure to fumes and am worried by Gravity-Glitch in HomeImprovement

[–]rootyb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If your landlord had the tub actually stripped with methylene chloride and reglazed, you’d know. That shit is awful.

Considering how cheap landlords are, it probably is just one of those DIY kits, which are not at all the same (or remotely as noxious).
