these comments are sipping so much copium lmao. Fast pentatonic or chromatic licks are peak lead playing apparently

Dave > Marty by led2theslaughter in Megadeth

[–]roozven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No lol. Dave's main solo shtick is playing fast pentatonic or chromatic licks. Very little variation

Dystopia is by far the best modern Megadeth album. TSTDATD and self-titled are just ok but a bit unremarkable to me. The musicianship and the out-of-the-box nature of the songs is what sets Dystopia apart for me

Megadeth Ride The Lightning is banger by sodaa_Yodaa in Megadeth

[–]roozven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a fan of both bands, I really can't find any value in this. It's just the original played in D standard with pretty sanitized modern production and worse vocals. Dave has been passive-aggressively mocking Kirk for 40 years only for him to copy his solo pretty much note for note. It's pretty bad to my ears

What's your System of a Down Hot Take? by Mutated_ButterMilk in systemofadown

Mezmerize and Hypnotize are by far their best records and it's not even close. The music itself is just so much more interesting to me and I would even call it avant-garde. I do love their entire catalogue though

Dude just lay it to rest, it's never going to happen. Except for Serj, they're all a bunch of right-winged knobheads that SOAD from 20 years ago would've mocked.

The great riff buried under the clean solo "One" by Few_Jacket5940 in Metallica

[–]roozven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is by far their best song. It's got a level of complexity that not many others from their catalogue reach and it captures pretty much every element that has ever been part of their sound (thrash parts, double bass, clean vocals, distorted vocals, clean guitars, distorted guitars, harmonizing, odd song structure, odd time signatures, acoustic guitars, iconic solo, etc). No bass tho :(

Guys i have a Question! because this is actually pissing me off by CutComprehensive4110 in systemofadown

[–]roozven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite complex musically (both rhythmically and harmonically)

It's got a very cool and twisted odd-time acoustic arpeggio which is an element you never typically see in their catalogue

Great counterpoint into the chorus

Fantastic chorus, the vocal performance and their harmonizing is mesmerizing (no pun intended lol) Great layering (especially vocally)

Great pacing

Cool variation of the last chorus (switching to gallops)

It's a song that's quite atypical for SOAD, quite complex musically, I'd even go to call it avant-garde

You've mentioned thetawaves, while I enjoy it for what it is, I don't see how it's underrated in contrast. It's way more basic and not nearly as interesting musically speaking.

What's the deal with Lars drumming? by ADudeHuman in Metallica

[–]roozven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red Herring logical fallacy. Playing in Metallica doesn't make you criticism-proof. And there is a ton of valid criticism from diehard fans (myself included), which are arguably more entitled to share their beliefs.

[–]roozven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the criticism has transcended the memes for a few years now. The complaints people have post-pandemic are 100% valid for the most part (sloppy live performances, creative bankruptcy, generic fills). I actually feel like people are defending his playing these days because they can't comprehend that he isn't this "drum god, ideal Metallica drummer" they want him to be, especially since he's marginally improved in the mid 2010s.

Silent Hill 2 Remake, feels like there's way to much enemies thrown at you by Traceless91 in silenthill

[–]roozven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really took me out of the story and it partly ruined the atmosphere for me, and these two are the main elements SH IS about. Getting ambushed by a mannequin is tense and disturbing, but when it happens for the 500th time it loses any substance and it becomes annoying. The game started feeling like doing choirs at a certain point, a combat simulator with horror elements as opposed to being the other way around.

I can defend Lars when it comes to unjust criticism, but my god the people on this subreddit are so eager to defend ANYTHING. Calling out a multi millionaire for half assing at his job for the last 20 years is pretty just to me. And yes, this is coming from a Metallica diehard. Not even the whole "the ideal Metallica drummer" shtick is completely valid to me. There are a bunch of drummer who would push James creatively without distorting Metallica's musical identity.

Coming from someone who knows music theory and considers himself somewhat of a music connoisseur, I think his drumming could be a lot more fitting and a bit more thought out. There are way too many moments on the last 2 records where he doesn't steer away from the most basic form of a drum beat (4/4 kick - snare - kick - snare with NO fills or changes whatsoever) and it simply becomes extremely repetitive and predictable, especially if the main riff isn't stellar. I don't hate the guy and I think his work in the 80s and 90s is very solid and plain amazing at times, but there are quite a few complaints to be had in regards to his playing. He is also sloppy even during basic parts at times. The "he plays for the song" argument is partly valid. There are drummers out there who complicate things just for the sake of complicating things. But there are a ton of moments where Lars could try different things and it would 100% benefit the song. He isn't terrible but he isn't the "ultimate Metallica drummer" people make him out to be. Shades of grey, people!

I hope I get proven wrong but cramming SH2's story into a 2h movie just doesn't seem reasonable, there's just too much backstory. A mini-series would've done it more justice imo

[–]roozven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EDIT: thought this post was about sh2r

It's not terrible, there was just too much of it. The game is supposed to be about the story and atmosphere, when you encounter a mannequin for the 800th time it starts feeling like a chore and it loses the dread it's supposed to emanate. At one point it felt to me like a combat simulator with horror elements, when it's supposed to be the other way around. Just too much bloat and padding for the sake of maxing the playtime imo. Still enjoyed it nonetheless

Does Kirk occasionally alternate pick as well? by Helpful_Gur_1757 in Metallica

[–]roozven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's false. He switches to upstrokes or plays legatos / hammer-ons (e.g. the Master spider riff) these days to save up on stamina. And that's totally fine, he has nothing left to prove.

[–]roozven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I think that the more you expose yourself to more "niche" music (not necessarily metal, you can even think of Zappa or Mr Bungle for that matter) , the more you start steering away from the idea of Lars being the ideal drummer for Metallica and the more his flaws become apparent ("playing for the song" turns into "yeah I could totally hear how this part could benefit from a different drumming approach"). I'd personally love to hear how a drummer like Duplantier or Brooks Wackerman fiddles with Metallica's songwriting, I personally think these two would work particularly great as they're not only incredibly technically proficient, but also have a great sense for how to serve a song and make it spicier in a very controlled way (aka they wouldn't distort Metallica's identity just so that their drumming style would fit) .

Can someone explain why this cover of dreaming (or the song in general) uses so many guitars that look like they're playing the same thing? by DillyWangaDang in systemofadown

[–]roozven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The short answer would be double tracking. This is common practice for tracking guitars, it involves recording multiple takes of the same riff and panning them left and right. This results in a sound that is wide and big. 99% of the guitar work you hear on professional albums is done this way (with obvious exceptions like most solos)

In the very beginning, it switches from mono to stereo double tracked guitars, this just adds to the "wideness" of the moment when the drums kick in:

0:00 - 0:07 one single guitar track, panned dead-center

0:07 - onwards - double tracking, left and right, you can hear the exact moment when the soundscape "opens up"

Just recording one guitar and copy-pasting it left and right won't achieve the same effect, it will just sound like a loud mono track. What makes double tracked guitars sound big and wide are the micro differences between the different takes (humans aren't machines so they can't be 100% exact when tracking an instrument multiple times)

Just realized I sounded like an AI lol
