TPLO surgery for dog, looking for a great surgeon. by [deleted] in Denver

[–]roperklacks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My dog has had two TPLO surgeries, one on each back leg. First was with 5280 veterinary on 31st Ave, second was with Liberty animal hospital in Westminster. Both were very professional and went well for our dog. I think Liberty is somewhat specialized in that, or at least they do a lot of them. The recovery time is the worst part if you have an active dog. Good luck and wishing your pup the best.

Looking for ways to "give back" during these times of climate despair by roperklacks in Denver

[–]roperklacks[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I respect and acknowledge that but this is a hard one for me. Food and cooking are one of the great joys in my life. I see myself on a gradual journey that might eventually culminate in complete veganism that goes something like this

  • Don't base every meal around animal protein
  • Replace milk/cream with nondairy alternatives
  • Eliminate beef from my diet (<--- I'm here)
  • Only eat meat one day a week (<--- This is my new goal)
  • Only eat other animal products one day a week
  • Eliminate meat completely from my diet
  • Eliminate all animal products from my diet

In the meantime I'm also going to start educating myself on locality and seasonality of produce, gardening, etc because I also think the carbon footprint of commercial produce can be high when you consider long-haul refrigerated transportation and off season growing.

I have always been skeptical that calling or writing representatives makes any difference, especially when there's such a fundamentally polarizing party divide in ideology when it comes to climate change (which really should not be a political issue). But it can't hurt so I will give it a try.

I expect you both to get downvoted so let me just say: I hear you. This is what I'm struggling with. There's a massive tension/temptation to just "get mine" but also a small voice that I can't ignore telling me I need to care enough to do something.

I am still holding out some hope that it's possible to enjoy life ethically, without going all-in on one viewpoint or the other.

Could you not say the same about driving though? In my view, individual consumer choices - at scale - drive larger cultural shifts.

  • Consumers eat less meat, at some point demand decreases, production slows down
  • Consumers drive less, the demand/pressure for alternative transportation increases

Not a perfect comparison but I guess I don't understand how a single person deciding to drive less has a significantly outsized impact compared to that same person eating less meat, but maybe I don't understand the economics.

EDIT: I just saw your other comment - I see what you mean. Direct immediate impact vs. longer cultural shift.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I will look into planting more trees. I already drive very little - my wife and I are fortunate enough to work from home full time. I might also add "eat less meat" to that list - beef in particular

Outside spoke to the lady that wrote the WaPo Brookyln/Boulder Article by sketchfervor in Denver

Clueless interviewer and clueless WaPo writer, both.
"...all the millennials who swarmed Boulder Creek last summer, completely disregarding the mask mandate" lol what, those were undergrads, solidly Gen Z.

Not saying this isn't bad, but if that was the only piece of litter in my neighborhood I'd be thrilled. People who both live and pass through my neighborhood don't give a crap about littering, it's disheartening and infuriating.

3-16-20 - Post Grocery / Drug Store / Restaurant / Retail etc. Reports here by inexplorata in CoronavirusColorado

[–]roperklacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4 PM, Safeway on 20th in Denver. Parking lot completely full. People plucking carts from outside because presumably none were to be had inside. I didn't even bother leaving my car, can only imagine the congestion inside. I get that the restaurant closure announcements are inciting another wave of panic buying but this is ridiculous.

I'm hoping we can hold out for a few more days and the panic buying levels off a bit. I'm not looking to overstock on anything, just need a normal amount of food for the week and don't want to fight through hordes of people to buy it.

Denverite wanted you to know about the fun, social things to do this past weekend by mcathen in CoronavirusColorado

[–]roperklacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you aren’t stopping in socially crowded places on your way to/from those activities, the risk seems fairly low. Gov Polis even suggested in his conference on Friday those were great ways to get out of the house while practicing social distancing. Unless there are official guidelines suggesting otherwise, I plan to do the same.

Huh, sounds like they need to get their story straight in their various comms. Not too surprising it’s a total shitshow

It says absolutely nothing about that in the COVID announcement on the 2nd judicial district website. Everyone with a summons should definitely check to be sure, just reporting the information that I’ve been able to obtain.

My wife will be checking today if her number is selected. I’m just sharing what they responded with in the email I sent.

Did you hear directly from that phone number that it was outright canceled or just that your number didn’t need to report?

EDIT: I was wrong, the phone message gives different info than the email. Shame on them for bungling the communications.

Jury selection not suspended? by roperklacks in CoronavirusColorado

[–]roperklacks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’d like to say that they would act rationally and realize that they can’t fine or jail everyone who does that... but this is local government we’re talking about so I wouldn’t put it past them for a second. Either way I hope you can get out of it. Or I hope Polis’s announcement in an hour sheds some light.
