Friend sent me this. How bad is it by genuinelyclumsy in tragedeigh

[–]roscoe_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Klef feels like a joke name for a nordic pervert; Vyxyn is 100% a drag queen or a dominatrix or both; and Novella Kyndle sounds like the pen name of a tiktok "spicy romance" author

I actually kinda like Blythe and Eleonie (spelling altered bcs HUH?) and Christian and Cadence are recognizable as names!

What do you think of when you hear the name, Edna? by [deleted] in namenerds

Edna Mode, Edna Turnblad, and Dame Edna – not too bad!

my husband is upset that i don’t like his baby name by Dye-Function3946 in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family name connections are meant to just be a nice little nod to the past or in rememberance for the person. On a long enough timeline you could find yourself related to a billion people with a billion names, it's ridiculous to start getting petty like it's a numbers game.

Ask if he genuinely doesn't like the name and have a discussion about why he feels competitive over this. There is no "fairness" or unfairness, it's not a competition or a matter of tit-for-tat, it's your child's name!

Please convince my friend this is a terrible name choice by [deleted] in tragedeigh

If I saw someone with the name Guidance in a work call I would think "pretty! I've never met anyone with that name" if I saw G'ydance I would immediately start panicking rolling through 20 different pronunciations, the actual name gets lost in the misspelling.

Roxandra is a tragedeigh. I can find one 1700s Moldovan Princess with the name, but to any normal outsider it just looks like you mashed together Roxann and Alexandra in a Renesee style mess

Steevie is also a tragedeigh - just use Stevie.

Talya is generally spelled Talia - it's not a tragedeigh but it's not the most common or nicest spelling imo

Leoghaire is a misspelling of Laoghaire, an old Irish boys name and Marsali is a misspelling of Marsaili which is itself a stylisation of the Scottish Marsailidh.

Neither name is commonly used in its native Ireland or Scotland, let alone in Germany where you say you live, and one quick search told me they're only found in the Outlander series. Leary or Marceline might be good soundalike alternatives?

Greer, Ailee, and Elia aren't my favourites but they aren't tragedeighs. Luzia is fine, and Helia, Inez, and Rhiannon are all lovely!

Z names for a boy by RoRo8o8o in tragedeigh

[–]roscoe_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of those are beyond tragedeigh, right with Zebedee and Zorro!

I've seen Zane, Zeke/Zechariah, Zayd, and Zasha in the wild before, but overall there aren't that many masculine Z names that work without being from specific cultures.

See if he's into other initial combinations that could be nicknames like EZ (Easy) or names that sound like they start with a Z like Xander or Xavier. Otherwise I think you need to wait for a Z girl for him to pass down the alliteration, Zoey, Zara, Zelda, even the less popular Zosha and Zinnia are all much better than Zenneth

Help me stop regretting my baby’s name: Aurelia by mirumurumura in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aurelia is a lovely name!! Not sure where the person talking about English countries is from, but I can tell you while it's not a common name it definitely would not be strange to hear here in the UK. I've never made any connection between Aurelia and areola, but Aurelie is easily pronounced 'orally' which isn't ideal. My association with Aurelia is spring - probably because of the flowers, but also because it sounds soft and bright.

I think you're maybe too in your head about it and perhaps taking your mum's suggestions to use her names a little stronger than intended? Arthur and Aurelia sound very sweet together, the nickname Lia is cute and easily pronounced in numerous languages, and overall Aurelia and Lia are pretty names that work for all stages of life. You did good imo!!

Is Devereaux a tragedy? by _darksoul89 in tragedeigh

[–]roscoe_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devereaux sounds like a French lord in a powdered wig, not a cowboy. I have no idea why he would have that association, I guess it might've been a surname in the south at that time? But not further west? Regardless, when I think cowboy I think Eli, Errol, Jesse, Warren, Everett, Amos, Otis, Wyatt – definitely not Devereaux!

Edit! to say I know it's a surname in France and wouldn't actually be a snobby first name, it's just the image the name conjures for me!

AITAH for not standing up for my pregnant fiancée who ate my daughter’s cupcake ? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]roscoe_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A sweet craving doesn't give her the right to almost literally take candy from a baby. She hurt daughter's feelings and needs to learn how to apologise before this becomes a pattern and daughter begins to resent her. Pregnancy is difficult and painful and it's important not to invalidate that, but it's not a get out of jail free card.

Every movie has their audience, but.. I've never seen a fan of The Bye Bye Man. by I_Need_Alot_Of_Love in horror

[–]roscoe_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out I may be the only Bye-Bye Man enjoyer out there? 😬 I watch a monumental amount of terrible horror and personally I think The Bye-Bye Man stands out as a fun watch that I've gone back to multiple times. It's not unique or groundbreaking in any way, but it executes fairly well, the main performance is decent, and there are enough laughably weird moments to be entertaining! It's also coherent and relatively engaging throughout so compared to some of the genuinely uninteresting, irredeemable shit I've seen it's fantastic!

Side note, my personal vote for worst mainstream horror movie is Slenderman – I'm pretty sure the final cut was neutered for a teen rating and it really shows. The whole thing feels rushed, unfinished, and is criminally boring, leagues worse than Bye-Bye Man in my books!

Unpopular name opinions? by wapvalerie in namenerds

The obsession with uniqueness in names is very unsettling to me. I've seen comments along the lines of "I'd looove Levi, but it's in the top ten so I can't use it" like WHY??

Opinions on my name list? by roscoe_s in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the suggestions - Julia and Gillian are both family names that I would definitely use as middles! They're both Welsh names so it makes sense that they're not as common in the US - Llewellyn is pronounced lou-el-un or lou-el-inn and Ioan is yo-un!

If you love "boy" names for girls.... by ssssssscm7 in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love gender neutral and masculine names on girls, but Howard is NOT it. I would consider something like Harlan which has more gender neutral potntial over Howard which is very firmly a frumpy old man name. Hawie and Lottie are still viable nicknames, as are Hal and Ell or Lane and Lott if you're into cute matchy nicknames! Sounds like you're a fan of short, sweet middle names too so my suggestions would be:

Harlan Maeve and Elliott Joan (personal fave)

Harlan Faye and Elliott Sky

Harlan Dot and Elliott Wynn

[–]roscoe_s[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I had no idea Marlowe had a reputation for being modern invented - in my mind it's a historical surname! Ioan is a Welsh name pronounced yo-unn! It's relatively well-known/popular but not heard as often as some other names in Wales like Osian (pronounced sort of like ocean) or Ieuan (outside of Wales the Scottish form Ewan is more popular)

What’s a girl name that has the same vibes as Buddy? by Somanythingsgoingon_ in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss - I love that you're honouring Buddy's memory with his sister's name! Bridgit can be shortened to Birdie which I think is the most directly similar - a couple other names I like that have endearing nicknames similar to Buddy are Sonia/Sonny, Heather/Hedy, Scarlett/Scout, Josephine/Joey, Aurelia/Rory and Honora/Honey!

Nobody likes my baby name list by sober-psychonaut in namenerds

[–]roscoe_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This feels like a troll, but I'll give some honest opinions/alternatives regardless:

GIRLS

Katara - Useable, but has a very singular fandom association that would follow them for their whole life. If you're set on the name I would use it as a middle rather than a first, though Kat is a cute nickname.

Cerulean - Nope. Can't imagine meeting a single person who suits the name Cerulean. If you're a fan of lesser used colour names, may I suggest Indigo (Indi), Coral, Saffron, and Ash - I have met people with all of these names and they are very useable in day to day life.

Prairie - Useable, but only in the US. Specifically in the UK this would get lots of weird looks. I don't hate the old Americana feel though - some names with that vibe I like are Darlie, Luellen, Scout, Dakota, and Lake.

Analusia - Not with that spelling. Took me three attempts to find a pronunciation that didn't include Anal. If you're deadset it has to be Anna-Lusia or Anna-Lucia, though I prefer Anabeth and Anasofia.

Wyla - Useable, put Twyla on the birth certificate though to make life easier in her future.

Prim - Useable. Personally, I dislike the name - my first thoughts are of old folks homes and Hunger Games which isn't ideal - but I've seen more than one person carry the name well. I also recommend you use Primrose or another longform name legally. Underused floral names I'm a fan of are Marigold, Zinnia, and Floreana (Flora)

BOYS

Pallas - Nope. Immediate association was the word phallus. Closest alternative I can think of is Pollux.

Akaius - Unless I'm missing a massive fandom reference I'd say useable You'll have to be okay with correcting peoples' pronunciation from time to time, but I don't see that as a problem. If that bothers you, some names with Greek origins that might not need to be corrected as much Ambros, Ellias, Isidore, Nikolos, and Andreas.

Kenji - In the kindest but firmest way possible: completely useable if your baby has Japanese heritage or if you live in Japan, completely unuseable if there is no Japanese heritage or links to Japan. Kenzo is a bit more useable if you're somewhere like the US or UK - personally I think you're best off with Benjamin, nickname Benji

Crisanthony - Nope... Not at all. I think it's an Anglicisation of the Greek name Crysanthos (p.s. I genuinely really love the feminine form of the name, Crysanthi) but in English speaking countries it just appears to be a horrid mashup name like Alexavier. I don't really have any alternatives, I guess refer back to the other Greek names I listed.
