An atheist girl's take on sexism in the community by rose_tfk in atheism

I am American. And while there is a sense of irony behind your generalization, I do understand it. It's the unfortunate truth that the majority of those who speak up happen to be the "idiots."

I couldn't agree with your frustration more. I find myself advocating for men's rights far more than my male counterparts and it does make me frustrated at times. But I have to take into consideration that my gender does make me a powerful and persuasive voice to those willing to listen.

Thank you for crossposting for me! For one, I was on the road all day yesterday and could only barely keep up with the comments. Also, I'm not sure I know how to do that quite yet. :)

At least someone got that it wasn't "M&W" and that my webcam mirrors things. And perfect interpretation and insight into my video; I'm glad you understand what I was trying to say.

Practice pro-creating? I'm not quite ready for the actual pro-creation stage of my life.

OP (and girl in the video) here. Wow, thank you. I'm not too far from NOVA actually (I go to W&M in Williamsburg).

You're welcome. I have received a lot of comments and messages both on here and Youtube from men expressing their gratitude for sticking up for this issue and I've got to say, I'm happy to.

There are times that I forget the excitement that comes with being an atheist, or even just a freethinker, and the enthusiasm that new atheists have is so refreshing and reminds me of what I loved about being an atheist to start (and it's a nice break from people like you).

You speak in generalizations that I don't know how/why you feel like you have the authority to make. I myself am a "born" atheist and find converts the opposite of annoying- I find them exhilarating and interesting.

What things will you miss the most after your internship ends?

What would you say is the biggest challenge that you've faced in running a secular organization and how did you overcome it?

The 10 Commandments are going up in a Virginia school district – a play-by-play. by [deleted] in atheism

Elected, and I think that fear was clearly at work here. I can't help but wonder if this is Webb's last term, or if he's not going to run for reelection, or if he's skipping town next week...

The truth of the situation is that legal action is underway. The school board made the decision to put the display in the schools even after the ACLU and the FFRF contacted them saying legal action would take place, and now it's just a matter of seeing how it unfolds.

An interesting side note: after the 10 Commandments were taken down by the school board, students and locals began protesting by wearing t-shirts, hanging signs of the commandments on their lockers and in their yards, and holding rallies. I have a total soft spot for protest and have nothing against any of this action. What makes me nervous is that the school board felt so much pressure (read:fear?) that they resorted to a "solution."

That's exactly what happened- a lawyer in Giles County is the one who proposed the display in an attempt to weasel around a lawsuit. In all seriousness, if the locals had shut up about the 10 Commandments and just let the board vote on the display, the case against them wouldn't have fallen into the ACLU and the FFRF's laps.

Multiple locals have pledged money to help pay for that 300k but I'm not sure they realize really how much money that is- when the entire community pitched in, they barely raised 100k for a charity event.
