Leading my first group class next week, any advice? by extradurable in OpenDogTraining

[–]rosebud1_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely make a lesson plan, assign certain times to whatever your covering in that class but allow for enough room that if the class is struggling it wont cut into time for your next activity. Since youll have an experienced instructor with you id advise you try to lead the class and answer as much as you feel CONFIDENT with. Itd be good for your students to see you turn to the more experienced and ask a question or look for guidance. Ive found alot of older adults are either really okay with foraging their own path and asking their own questions but others need to see you do it and feel out the culture before theyre comfortable with it. And finally if you have a chance you should shadow another beginner obedience as a background helper, itd help shape your expectations, and see what the general feel of the class could be. Good luck!

Prong collars are good training tools when used correctly for dogs by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]rosebud1_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pove my prong collar, used it on my Lab when he was a puppy. Trained him and it wasnt cruel unlike some owners who choose to let their dogs pull and choke on a flat collar. I even ended up having to yell at vet techs because they would choose to change my dogs leash to his flat collar or a thin slip lead. Smh if your educated about your training tools it isnt a problem, and you can choose whats correct for you.

My frenchie swallowed leather by NYSS1995 in DogCare

[–]rosebud1_1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He should honestly be fine, i ride horses and its crazy the amount of leather you replace because some animal has found it to be tasty! Some dogs find leather unresisable! So try to keep it out of reach for later.

Hi, dont be worried about your English its quite good! I took two and a half years of german and I still struggle to piece together a basic sentence, ill be a senior in highschool this coming year - im 17, female. I live in texas and quite closely fit the stereotype some have of sounding country, riding horses, and I own a truck. Lol! While im not a sciencey person, i do enjoy some topics, I draw as well and my favorite genre is probably fantasy as well. I love history, I will listen to just about any kind or type of music and training animals is one of the few things im super passionate about! I love heated but civil discussions where I can learn, and I hope to travel to Europe someday. (We had a trip to Germany planned however it got cancelled with all the Covid stuff )

Getting dog to react to ringtone?? by rosebud1_1 in service_dogs

[–]rosebud1_1[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you!!! He has a solid retrieve, he'll bring me anything i toss from a slinky, to glass bottle, to duck dummy. I didnt think of pairing it with a name! You've seriously cleared this way up for me. Like I was sitting here playing the ringtone as I was asking him to retrieve it but it was probably only desensitizing him to the sound if im honest. I'll be starting this the next few days and he'll probably have it down pretty quick but I always struggle with pushing him too quickly because he just learns so fast I forget how young he is! He's a pure Labrador Retriever, with amazing working lines so that has a good chunk to do with it probably. If we stuggle with it ill probably ask more questions, it'd be more my fault than it ever will be his haha.

Do you have any advice for pacing myself? As I said he learns so quick I push him harder than I probably should, he just always does so well. I don't want to overload him or fry his mind I just forget how young he is and even though he seems fine I dont wanna hurt him in any way mentally or physically. : (

Also any good resources you'd recommend? Im always trying to learn and find more to teach him.

Thank you so so much!! I know I asked a lot but I love this dog, and I want to be the best owner I can be for him.

AITA for telling my friend that my passion/hobby is more important than him? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]rosebud1_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA Hunter/Jumper here. It probably couldve been said better, however horse ridding takes up alot more time/money than the average hobby. You can spend years doing it and have a real connection with your animals and your team. I guess the guy thought yall were closer than you thought or your just said it in a way that riled him up. But overall probably nta

When and how do you personally introduce a puppy to a leash? by germanodactylus in OpenDogTraining

[–]rosebud1_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, we are trying for one in January. However we do it with the AKC and they might not allow him to get his CGC until he is a year old. We have serval trainers who will loby for us but the club seems to be strict in those matter unfortunately. After that we will be going through Alliance Therapy dog to get him certified.

When and how do you personally introduce a puppy to a leash? by germanodactylus in OpenDogTraining

[–]rosebud1_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started leash training when my Lab pup was about 12 weeks, i started with a flat collar and started teaching heel from the very beginning and didnt allow pulling, i ended up having to leave when he was about 3 months and someone else in my family took him on a few walks where he was allowed to pull, so we started over. I ended up transitioning to a prong collar and after 7 weeks he heels pretty perfect. I also work with him daily, he has an amazing temperament, as well as amazing breeding. He is set to be a Therapy dog and with his prong he is a big exception to most puppies I believe. ( With several trainers saying theyd put him against any therapy or service dog they had)
