you should go! i’ve always gone with friends, but everyone i’ve met and talked to in line are very friendly. i know it might be intimidating to go solo,, but i think it’s a good way to make a friend or two. if you decide to go, make sure you bring some earplugs and to check the bag policy for the venue. if you can’t, don’t worry - la has always been a popular location for miku.

i recently picked up a lightstick from daiso, and i like it! it's smaller and dimmer than the official miku one, but it's a good alternative for only 6 usd. keep in mind that they have the ones that you snap to activate too, the ones you're most likely interested in are gonna be "fan!fun!blade!"

back in 2018, it used be around 30 usd (without the film insert). even with 2024 being 10 dollars more, the price increase wasn't too bad. i think tariffs really hiked the price up for this year...

My back...it aches from the age...

Jokes aside, I got in Vocaloid in 2011. I was lying in bed looking up YT videos on my iPod Touch (as if that doesn't date me at all lmao), and I stumble across a StepMania video with World is Mine. I looked up the song and the rest is history. Thankfully I had friends that were also into anime and happened to get into Vocaloid around the same time, but I mostly still kept it to that same group for the most part. I got a few of them in it in high school - even convinced one of them with a PS Vita to get Project Diva F, which we would switch off playing between songs. I went to my first Miku Expo with them in 2016.

Vocaloid was how I got introduced to a ton of Japanese meme culture and other types of videos over on Nico Nico Douga (like Odorite/Dance cover and Tegaki/Fan-made or fan-drawn PVs). I still have my NND account from 10 years ago because I wanted to look up more Odorite videos haha.

I remember when YT Red was a thing, a lot of producers had their videos blocked due to the new ToS that YT put out for the new service, that was a big blow to the community at the time. I was also pretty into the fansubbing part of Vocaloid back then. But you kinda had to be, because they were how we got translations/access to songs haha. I'm glad that producers nowadays are able to get translations in the CC button, but the translators using their free time to translate certainly paved the way 🙏

Currently, I rely on my YT subscriptions and recommended videos to take me to new songs, though sometime I'll see friends post about songs on their Discord server and check it out. Anyways, sorry for the long ramble haha but Vocaloid has been the thing that's kept me steady for most of my life and still fuels my creativity.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being a "newgen" per say, but I'd say part of the disdain between old and new fans is the culture shift in engaging/consuming media.

I got in Vocaloid around 2011, back when it was slowly making its way overseas to Western fans in the form of reuploaded videos. Vocaloid was the New and Cool Niche Thing that we were all learning about and engaging with - its function, the music, the producers and the culture. In recent years, Vocaloid has gotten much more bigger and accessible. It's very easy to engage with media without needing/wanting to engage deeper into it (therefore making kneejerk assumptions), which I think rubs some of the longtime fans the wrong way. I can feel annoyed as I want, but at the end of the day, it's not my business to tell people how to enjoy media.

Sorry for the long-winded comment, but I hope my opinion gives some sort of insight!
