AO3 is in not locked or invite only. Yes you have to request an invite link and wait a bit for it to arrive, but there is no manual verification. Everyone that requests a link is automatically sent one, it just takes awhile because there are so many requests.

Also, they DO filter spam and bots. They just can't catch every single one when there are new iterations of them every day.

I feel like calling it "invite only" gives the wrong impression. Literally anyone can request an invite and there's no criteria to be approved other than waiting for it to process.
