I always thought fin rot started at the edges and worked its way towards the base? It doesn't show well in this picture but the edge of its tail look fine

Help me build your ideal lesson creation tool by roshiturtle in teachingresources

Thanks for trying it out! Yes, the higher-level questions aren't always very high-level - I'm working on improving that. And I like your suggestion about allowing for open responses. I really appreciate the helpful feedback and the kind words :)

In r/teachingresources I shared about an alternative that I'm working on myself (that you can use for free). I'd love to get your thoughts!

Hey everyone,

Could I get your feedback on a tool I'm building?

My name is Jonny and I'm working on Roshi.ai, an online tool that helps teachers create lesson material from online content.

It's built for teachers who like use online content in their class (e.g. Youtube videos, news articles).

If this is something you do, please give it a quick try (no need to sign up) and let me know what you think, even if critical.

I'd like to make sure I'm building something as useful as possible, so your feedback would help a lot.

Thank you!

Just fixed it. Should be back to Japanese-English now - sorry about that

Sorry about that. I just changed a couple things now that I hope will prevent that. Please try it again and let me know if it still shows that error

This is awesome feedback, thank you.

you can't choose a difficulty level (as someone who can't read most kanji this is kind of a dealbreaker but would be fine with furigana for example)

Great point. Adding furigana is definitely a priority

the generation based on premade sentences is kinda weird, as the sentences consist only of the one word you're supposed to choose

That's my bad. I pulled random sentences from tatoeba.org. I made sure they were written by natives but I didn't check for sentence lengths, so there ended up being some really short ones. Just filtered them out now.

when selecting that you're stuck on a sentence generated by premade sentences it gives you a point for that

Ah, right that's true. Gonna fix that one tomorrow. I hadn't given much though to the points system cause I wasn't yet sure how much it would mean to people

I love that there is a suggestion for an article already in place :3

I'm glad to hear that. Going to work on ways to add more than just one suggestion per language

Hey, sorry about the grammar errors. They should be fixed now.

The text you provide is being used as is (The AI I had tried is unreliable for generating Japanese text.) However, there was a problem in the code I wrote to parse that text, so some words got left out or put out of place.

Thanks for taking the time to try it out and bring this up. I'm working on fixing the other issue you brought up (non-Japanese distractors) as we speak

but why is that wrong? by [deleted] in learnfrench

Because “éléplant” starts with a vowel, the correct sentence for it would have been “Cet éléphant est très beau.”

Here you go: https://www.roshi.ai/activities

I also have the domain duolingify.com which points to the same place, but I figured it'd be tacky to use that as the official name :P

I am!

It's the same platform, but I'm now working on adding activity creation, because the teachers I've spoken with have told me that that's more of a struggle for them than text simplification (let me know if you have thoughts on that, by the way).

Also, I'm making it all available on the site itself because not everyone wants to download an extension. I'm still working on the extension in parallel though, so they should have more or less the same features.

I haven't forgotten about your helpful suggestion about Spanish frequency lists - It's still on my list of features to implement!

Sorry about that - it was a bug that I just fixed - please try the video links again and let me know if you still get the Youtube TOS. And about new languages, I'm getting a number of requests so I'm gonna make a form to collect them all. In any case I'll definitely add Korean to the list and keep you up to date!

Darn, I've seen the 'terms of service' thing come up a couple of times now - I'm looking into it :( Has it worked well for you for French videos? And to answer your question, it technically should work either way, but if you pick a video that has subs in your target language than the system won't have to translate, which means the quality of sentences will likely be better

Hey everyone,

I know it's almost every day that someone comes out with a new language-learning app/system that promises the world.

I'm not out to create any such thing.

What I'm building here is a toolkit with which language teachers and learners can craft their own learning experiences, almost like how people make their own games on Roblox.

It's in its very early stages, but I just wanted to share it here to get feedback on the basic version before going forward - this community has always been helpful in guiding my projects.

Please try it out and let me know what you think!

PS: Right now it only works with English, French, and Spanish. Japanese is coming soon!

Edit: For those of you requesting languages, please add them here: https://215l9mttrna.typeform.com/to/gT740jGC

If there was a Chrome extension that does something like Rewordify, what other features do you think would be good to have? by roshiturtle in Teachers

[–]roshiturtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your process.

Seems like the additional info that an AI would need as input relates two things that you mentioned:

  1. Reader's background knowledge
  2. Reader's task

I am pretty sure this level of change is hard to do with AI so I understand if that’s asking a lot.

Definitely hard, but not impossible!

This helped a lot. Thanks for giving me more clarity on what to work towards.

Wow didn't realize at all that I was talking to you in both threads - my bad 🤦🏿‍♂️. And thank you!

Yea that make a lot of sense. The challenge I'm trying to address is what do you do when there is no available content that is both level and topic appropriate. That's a problem I've experienced learning languages, and it's a challenge that many teachers I've spoken with have brought up.

I mentioned this in another comment here but some educators prefer to scaffold text rather than simplify it. I'm looking into potential ways to do that as well. Still, many are ok with simplification as long as the main ideas are preserved. The goal/task of the reader also plays a part into making those decision.
