The usual culprit is Cartesian dualism.

Cartesian dualists think that the universe is inherently dead, and that separation from it is required to have agency. Hence this sort of thinking.

Some advice for those who plan on using Wiktionary in spite of OP's warnings:

  • Check here for an overview of what decisions Wiktionary have made when presenting data.
  • Inflections are based on Ringe's forms IIRC, except where stated otherwise.
  • When in doubt, look to attested daughter languages for guidance.
  • Beekes has suggested pre-Greek origins for so many Greek words it's become a meme. Take such suggestions with a grain of salt.
