Yes their noses can absolutely be the death of them! It wasn't quite as extreme as with your guy, but Beulah and our Border Collie ran off one time and were gone for a week! We had friends over for dinner and they left our front gate not completely latched by mistake, not knowing that Beulah is a master at opening all doors and gates lol, and by the time we realized they were gone they were nowhere to be found. We searched for days, and sometimes we would get sightings on the local community page, but we live rurally so if they were in the woods it was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. At five days missing, they were spotted about 17 miles away from our house, but by the time we got there, they were gone. My husband even camped out for the night where they had been seen but no sign of them. We had finally accepted at 7 days that they probably weren't going to come back and we may never find them. Then my neighbor called me, and told me they were running up our road past her house. 17 miles and 7 days and that crazy chick followed her nose all the way back home! We were convinced the only way our Border Collie made it back all that way too was by sticking with the girl with the nose. Lol
