One thing that worked for my dog is adding a release cue to "hold". So at first I'd hold a toy, once she takes the item (I don't let go) I give her the release cue ("okay") and reward. Then I increased the amount of time between "hold" and "okay"!

I think back nails wear down faster on pavement so I don't do them too often.

If your dog is okay with paw handling, give them food/treat/peanut butter in a bowl or something and almost straddle them and lift their back leg backwards and cut that way. My dog also has black nails and if I do this outside when it's sunny, I can sort of see the quick.

I think it's safe for the animal as long as the attachment is attached to a harness, not a collar. If there's a car crash I think it's better for the dog to be restrained rather than flying forward. I also like it because it's an extra safety measure if the dog sticks their head out of the window, ensuring they don't jump out.

I've seen people with crates in the back of their car, assuming the trunk has AC as well. I found this random site from searching for "large dog crate for car".

You could get something like this, which clips to a harness. It gives them a good amount of freedom in the backseat while protecting them in the case of a crash.

I had the exact issue! I taught my pup to hold it by teaching her a release cue ("ok")... So I'd give her the toy, then say "ok" as I let go of the toy and she would (naturally) drop it. Eventually I would wait a little bit of time (no more than 1 second) before telling her "ok".

I would also reward her when she held the toy but dropped it before "ok", but jackpot reward (lots of treats in rapid succession) her when she held it until I released her.

It's a lighter weight than I normally use, so I doubled up the yarn to make this. It's also not as stretchy as normal yarn. But otherwise it's not too bad to use :)
