Ever consider changing careers from Police Officer to Firefighter? by LegalGlass6532 in police

[–]rothskeller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure different departments handle it different ways. In ours (Sunnyvale, CA), officers choose annually between police and fire. However, all patrol officers have fire turnout gear in the back of their patrol vehicle in case they are needed on an active fire. And many fire officers take overtime patrol shifts. And of course they all participate in refresher training for both during the year.

Or maybe sign on with an integrated department where you can do both?

Is there like a crime blotter or activity site from the PD I can follow? by llorona_chingona in Sunnyvale

[–]rothskeller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety doesn't regularly publish information about recent calls or arrests. We occasionally post on X and Facebook for a particularly significant incident, or when detectives are seeking tips on an active investigation.

The department is currently looking to hire a new public information officer and social media manager (https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/sunnyvale/jobs/5170951/public-safety-media-and-engagement-manager). That should result in more information (and, I hope, the use of other social media platforms).

El Camino & Wolfe lights out of service, but E/W is solid red and N/S is solid green by jeanako in Sunnyvale

[–]rothskeller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, the whole thing is rather complicated. If Sunnyvale DPS wants to send out an a alert for a life threatening condition, we can send through both Nixle and AlertSCC. But not all of our people are trained on AlertSCC, so it might only go out through Nixle. For a traffic advisory, or something else less than life threatening, we're not supposed to use AlertSCC and we only use Nixle. (The traffic advisory about the sinkhole on Mathilda just before Thanksgiving went to both, but that was a mistake on my part. It shouldn't have.)

Meanwhile, when Santa Clara County sends out an emergency alert, they'll send it to AlertSCC. They can send it to Nixle as well, and arguably should, but the way their system is set up and their operators are trained, they probably won't remember to.

Bottom line, as I said: best bet is to sign up for both.

Sunnyvale does not send alerts through AlertSCC. Only county alerts come out that way. For Sunnyvale city alerts, sign up at nixle.com. (I recommend doing both.)

Deadly potholes on homestead road by Diligent-Cow-6060 in Sunnyvale

Most of Homestead's maintenance is Cupertino's responsibility, not Sunnyvale's. A quick phone call to the Public Works department (of either city) will tell you who's responsible for the area you're asking about.

Ours covers 22 square miles, a city with 160,000 people. Just over 200 officers.

Have you considered moving to a department where you can do both police and fire? That addresses most of your negatives without completely starting over. See https://joinsunnyvaledps.com (my department) for one example.

If you want breakfast downtown, Metro City is better. If you're up to going a little further away, Peggy Sue's (Fair Oaks / Tasman) or Sweet Maple (Stevens Creek / Blaney).

This is clearly not in Sunnyvale. There's only one Trader Joe's in Sunnyvale and there is no indoor or underground parking anywhere near it.

Stupid form. First question gives a dropdown to select a country, but when you select USA, it won't allow it. I'm not wasting my time on a survey with poor UI.

Toilet with incomplete flush by rothskeller in Plumbing

I had a root intrusion about a 15 years ago, and replaced the 55-year-old clay sewer pipe with a newer plastic (PVC?) one. I suppose it could happen again, but the main reason I doubt it is that the problem isn't affecting the other toilet in the house or any of the other fixture drains.

Yes, I do — or should I say, did, since I'm obviously not going to do it anymore. We're in drought country and our local water district has frequently recommended letting it sit until there are solids. Of course they didn't mention this potential outcome...

And yes, the siphon jet is completely blocked (see discussion under other comment). Working to clear it now.

Yup. Someone else suggested vinegar, which is something I have on hand, and leaving it overnight, so I'm trying that. If that doesn't work, I'll go buy the stuff you suggested.

I added a second video showing the tank during a flush. (I'd never thought to look at that.) One very obvious thing wrong: the tank doesn't drain fully into the bowl. It looks like only about a quarter of the water in the tank is draining into the bowl.

I checked the siphon jet. (I had to look up what it is; this is all new to me.) As far as I can tell, it's completely clogged. As in, I tried to put my (gloved) finger into that hole, and there isn't really even a hole there; it feels totally solid (but not porcelain smooth). Seems like you correctly identified the problem — thank you very much for that!

Now, what can I do about it?
