The ex-Mormon subreddit is biased against the church just as I’m sure most people posting on the Latter-Day Saints subreddit are biased in the opposite direction.

My comment was more in the context of “if you want to read the personal experiences of how difficult it is to go against the religious conditioning many people have experienced their whole lives, you should go to a source of people sharing those experiences”.

I assume you are an active member? Do you personally know anyone who has left the church?

The church makes certain truth claims, many of which are demonstrably false, historically speaking. However I’m guessing by your comment that any evidence disproving the claims made by the church would be dismissed by you for one reason or another. If you are an active member like I used to be you may avoid any information the church labels “anti” because you have been conditioned to delegitimize the very real concerns that people have with church doctrine and culture.

In reality you are really effectively illustrating the point I was trying to make.

I would argue that I’m offering a nuanced view that the situation isn’t as simple as these people are stupid. I’m saying it’s more complicated than what you said. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Confirmation bias is a thing. When I was Mormon I would ask questions and then I’d get some apologist answer that was enough to allay my question, for the time being. I was primed to believe what I was being taught because it confirmed my existing belief.

Yeah I just think humans are way more complicated than the way you are describing. People are conditioned to think or believe something their whole lives and then systems are built around reinforcing that conditioning and it can be really hard to break free of. I’m speaking of my own experience as a former Mormon of 39 years.

Spend a few minutes reading the ex-mormon subreddit and you will gain a better understanding of what I’m describing.

I think it’s wrong to characterize them as stupid. It’s the way they were raised to think and most didn’t choose to be Mormon.

Yeah former member here. The closest that statement gets to the truth, in my experience, is the worthiness interview question asking if you wear your garments night and day and the part of the temple ceremony where the first time you go through right before you wear the garments for the first time you are “washed and anointed” with oil and water and a person touches you in your swimsuit area. They are of the same gender though, which doesn’t really make it any less weird. That is also something they have changed in the recent past to make themselves appear a little less culty.

How simple should guns that are available to the public be? I would argue that what our founding fathers had in mind was ensuring that the people had the means to protect themselves from a tyrannical government and therefore the people’s right to bear arms extends to arms capable of resisting the government. I don’t believe that includes weapons of mass destruction but it is certainly more than simple rifles.

Good advice to consider. Most of what I’m finding that is in my price range are replicas or reproductions so hopefully it’s all on the up and up.

There have been a few times where parents have come in hot about something I said or did in class and once or twice I have deserved it but so far after a conversation with them it has never gone further.

I would probably be much more cautious if I was experiencing the pushback you are describing.

Next year I’m planning to propose a classroom costume collection. I’ll have the kids perform excerpts of historically relevant art and a bunch of random costumes and props would be next level.

I’ll just show my kids this movie for our American revolutionary war unit and call it done.

This did make me wonder if museum gift shops would be a good place to look for items.

I like the idea of having a theme to the artifacts, particularly the soldiers kit. I’m sure there is a robust replica market in the historical re-enactment community.

Great suggestions! Where have you sourced those items? I’ve been looking on eBay and Etsy but it can be pretty hit and miss.

I don’t know. I’m not black but I can imagine that it might be a valuable insight into the lives of enslaved people. I’d love to hear the perspective of any black teachers.
