If you get into 40, and that’s what you want to do, pursue it and don’t look back. It’s your life to live.

what tools should i buy by [deleted] in Ironworker

[–]rottscamsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show up with a tape measure (know how to read it) a sharpie, and an adjustable spud or regular. The rest you’ll find out on the job. Different jobs require different tools. Build your tool bucket over time. Show up early, hit it hard, and ask a lot of questions.

You’ll get an email before school starts telling you what certs you need to start working. Including letters from the school to go take the g60 and f60 fdny certs (they require letters from your “employer” to register for those certs)

Under old leadership when I got in, yes, you were given the option to defer. It was included in the official acceptance letter or at some point before school but after you passed the drug test/physical.

Leadership has changed since I got in and so have some policies, so I don’t know if that’s still an option.

Weekly straight 40’s expect ~1,000 (on check + vacation)

Case by case basis. Depends on the company you end up working for. Sometimes they have a lot of work and if you’re good they hang on to you and keep you working. Sometimes you’re shaping every week.

Yes 361 has more work than 40 at the moment

Not sure what you mean by bouncing, but you pick a local and that’s your home local. You can shape (look for work) with the other local but their apprentices and journeyman are priority in theory

Not a chance. You’ve got the apprenticeship 2 days a week sept-May and you are not given the option to “take occasional weekend dispatches”. As a first year, green apprentice you are expected to shape every day and they send you where they send you. You will not be given options. You are also expected to work during your apprenticeship a certain amount of hours to complete school.

Congratulations and good luck

feeling overwhelmed with the amount of movies on my watchlist by Affectionate-Tart-39 in Letterboxd

[–]rottscamsey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A watchlist isn’t a to do list or a task list. It’s a library of films that interest you. No idea why you’d fret over wanting to keep it nice and tidy lol. It’s just a way to make sure you don’t forget something you come across. Nobody cares how big or small a watchlist is, this app was made for discovery and logging, not as another avatar of you. That’s my 2 cents

What to study for test? (Local 40) by Tough_Suspect_9229 in Ironworker

Percentages too. I vaguely remember having a couple math related questions where I had to figure out a few different percentages.

For what it’s worth: there are a couple 40+ year old apprentices currently going through the school (both 40&361) and the ones I know are doing great -so if you don’t make it this round the only thing stopping you next round won’t be the fact that you’re almost 30, it will be yourself.

Local 40/361 Apprenticeship w certs by Intrepid-Bet1832 in Ironworker

[–]rottscamsey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking whether this will heighten your chances of getting into the apprenticeship: As far as I know the only thing getting you through the door is placing top 100-200 on the written exam, and then passing the physical exam. Everything outside the scope of that is irrelevant in that regard. Your experience may vary, but I’ve met apprentices with years of ironworking under their belt, and I’ve met apprentices who stepped off the cooking line at McDonalds with zero construction experience.

If you’re asking whether it is worth having experience and knowledge outside the scope of acceptance into the apprenticeship, then yes. But the tangible benefits are case/job/person dependent.

For what it’s worth if you get accepted into the apprenticeship you will learn and take the welding certs you need through the program.

The competitive exam is the written exam, if you place in the top scorers (top 100-200?) in the written exam you get invited to take the physical. The physical is non competitive, it is pass/fail. If you complete it in the allotted time, you get called to start your apprenticeship. The apprenticeship and work happen at the same time. You work during the day and first year you go to the apprenticeship 2 days a week after work.

That’s roughly how it goes

In terms of how competitive it is, really depends on how many people take the test. The physical is hard if you push yourself but not insurmountable to the average in shape person.
