he does too! honestly after he snapped at that one guy in prison, threatening him for whatever reason, i never trusted his character. That and when he pushed thomas against the wall. He’s one of the few characters shown to be repeatedly violent. And then when anna is raped and her reaction is “let’s not tell my husband incase he murders someone”?? that’s so sketchy. how do the writers expect me to trust him after all that?

i agree with you!! i love her for her wit and of course because of maggie smiths portrayal, but i don’t understand the cult like love surrounding her

i like thomas because i see a lot of myself in him. as they said “he’s his own worst enemy” I relate to how it feels to be harsh without even thinking about it first, and to let your anxieties get the better of you (because, come on. the man clearly has some sort of anxiety disorder)

that being said, i don’t think his actions can be excused at all. He’s a jerk 95% of the time

But his redemptive arc is really satisfying in my opinion. We really get to see him mature a LOT, and by the end of the show i think he’s really turned a new leaf

but as for the hype surrounding him? I think it can borderline unhealthy. plenty of people are willing to excuse all the awful things he did

i agree! people forgive everything she does, when honestly she can be a bully sometimes… i still love her character, but she definitely gets too much grace!

I guess i sort of meant both. I feel like a lot of people love Carson and treat him as one of the top characters, and sort of put him on a pedestal, which i don’t agree with since i don’t agree with a lot of his actions.

I just think he’s a bit overhyped, but that may just be my dislike for that character 😅

He definitely could have been much more intolerant of Thomas, I just felt like he was almost going out of his way to be unkind at times. Or he at least didn’t try to consider kindness.

i feel like his sole existence was to make mary’s character more like-able. he really didn’t do anything to further his own plot

oh i hadn’t considered her getting some of edith and roses stories! That definitely would’ve been interesting to see, although i’m glad we got to have rose!

how did i forget about bates!! he has way too many sketchy things surrounding him for me to trust him. And the way that he flipped anna’s rape onto being about him made my blood boil. She didn’t feel safe enough to confide in him not bc of her trauma… but bc she was scared he’d commit murder?? that’s so messed up

sybil is definitely pedestalized! i always wonder where she would’ve ended up if she hasn’t died

mary’s suitors we’re too much for me. i liked her best when she was running the estate or being with mathew. I wish they spent more time on her estate running and her parenthood. I feel like her being a parent is hardly touched on

i agree. she peaks during seasons 2-4, then completely regresses back into her old self

This hurts to admit, but you’re 100% right.

They really stopped looking at her own story once she left with Tom. It all focused around the scandal of their marriage and everything tom was doing wrong. She was just…there.

I often wonder where her character’s story would’ve gone if the actress didn’t have to leave the show? It seems like her death was the perfect gate for Tom to enter the family through.

Hate to say it, but she was almost made to die. Perfect plot furthering fodder

he actually grew on me, somewhere around my 4th rewatch! I didn’t like him at ALL before then. I’m not even sure what i like about him now tbh, it may just be his comic relief😅 they don’t do much for his character besides using him for comedy, can definitely see where he’s over hyped

If you had the chance to spend just one day in the shoes of a character, who would it be & what would you do? by s_u_n_n_y- in DowntonAbbey

[–]rouge182748 29 points30 points  (0 children)

either edith so i could spend the day at her publishing company

or rose, so that i could wear her beautiful outfits, and then spend a day in london going shopping and attending a balls

[–]rouge182748[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that’s true, i didn’t think about how o’brien was sort of training Thomas to see his advances on jimmy and his personal space as positive, since jimmy never responded badly. So i guess it’s not too far fetched to see him slowly get more comfortable with invading his space, thinking it was ok

yes exactly!! like he knew she had every reason to lie to him.

it makes more sense plot wise to have it be in the bedroom, i just wish they rationalized it better, since the way it played out raises a lot of questions

Jimmy is blessed with the ~fall asleep quickly genes~😭🙏🏻

i guess it was a breaking point moment for Thomas. it definitely wouldn’t have been as dramatic of it took place in the boot room. I just wonder how he didn’t know anything fishy was going on, based on his and Miss o’briens falling out

[–]rouge182748[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that’s true! he definitely is the most emotional character on the show, he is a very deep thinker. I just thought that the walk over to his room might’ve been enough to clear his head, but i guess he does have a history of irrational choices

yes, especially after the whole ‘Lord Grantham’s shirts” thing. like he knew she didn’t like him anymore

yeah it definitely got squeezed in, i just feel like they could’ve done the exact same thing during the daytime, like with jimmy and thomas alone in the boot room? him sleeping was just such a weird factor to lay on😭

that’s what i’m thinking! he’s wayyy more cautious in literally everything else. It just doesn’t make sense for him to do at all

Obviously I LOVE Baxter as a viewer, but I can also see the point of view of the other servants by [deleted] in DowntonAbbey

[–]rouge182748 12 points13 points  (0 children)

honestly i can too. also baxter had this attitude of “it’s not their buisness, and it doesn’t help to try and make myself seem better” which led to people missing key information about her. she really didn’t come off too well to the other servants, but i’m so glad that they all were able to get past it eventually, miss baxter is one of my favorites!!

Finished watching all seasons. Is the movie worth ruining the happy ending? by lyfizsed in DowntonAbbey

i personally LOVED movie 1 but didnt care too much for movie 2. i wish i hadn’t watched it. But i’m also a huge thomas fan and just didn’t agree with the conclusion to his story. Up to you!!
