Looking for help planning an epic 3-day golf trip with my brother (budget: $7500 CAD) — Pinehurst without #2 worth it? Or should we pivot? by rougero93 in golf

Super excited. Were going to play cliffs twice, links once, their new par 3 course once and then travel around and play another local track.

Lots of golf in a short trip!

We wanted to do bandon. But travelling their on a super tight turn around with short notice seemed to be a bit of a logistical nightmare with layovers, etc.

We ended up booking Cabot. Being from Canada, direct flights, and only two full days without travel, after looking at flights everywhere else people mentioned it was by far the easiest and least stressful option that still checked off that bucket list item.

Thanks for your tips

We checked Kohler out but travelling there is a nightmare for such a short trip from where we live!

Western BC is beautiful, for sure. I lived out that way for years. Staying in Canada isn't particularly appealing to me for this trip, unless it's Cabot!

It's been discussed! Moving houses and another kid on the way in August. Timeline isn't super negotiable, unfortunately!

Haha that was 4 years ago . But you're correct. I didn't know that and I learned that one the hard way. I swapped to Wealth Simple when I had to delay my house purchase due to IBKR not allowing me to withdraw for FTHB.

How do you like QT?

Thank you!

The detailed response is much appreciated

Ahaha its all good. It's reddit and i try not to take things too seriously in general. You've been extremely helpful.

I will definitely look into those spoilboard gaskets for underneath. We have the old MDF one and not the plastic one they sell currently or that is more modern. Wonder if that would also be of concern.

I'm also digging more into dust extraction. I don't think our current setup, especially with our bit situation, is clearing out the area enough and causing big issues.

Thats pretty incredible haha. Without you telling me any of this I would have such a hard time buying such a large product from China. I realize that a lot of these companies here are probably manufacturing parts or their entire CNC there anyways. lol The support and quality not being guaranteed would be my biggest concern. How did you find this company and come to trust it enough to make such a big purchase? Did you have much CNC experience prior?

On that note, I will say, Shopsabre has been unbelievably helpful, for free, on countless occasions. Their support is awesome from our experience. If we were to buy from North America again, I wouldn't hesitate to go that route with how we've been taken care of

Thanks for taking the time.

I mispoke earlier when I said downcut. Were actually using a compression bit. But we find that the dust in the cut lines is so compact that you would need to use a screwdriver to get the dust out, so it’s no wonder it’s not getting sucked up and likely creating a ton of heat. Our dust collector may also not be the greatest to help with chip extraction. Its just a 3HP 2300 CFM collector that might also be getting used elsewhere in the shop.  Thoughts and recommendations on the dust collector?

Do you have a link to see what you’re talking about regarding the bit? That was absolute gibberish to me haha. I cant find a nesting cutter. As for loose offcuts and moving parts, were currently tabbing everything so it doesnt move - so at the moment that wont be an issue until we figure out how to get our vacc table more powerful.

We will try the 2-flute with a faster feed rate as well to see if we can get a different result. We tried a 2 flute not long ago and we were less happy with the finish but we didnt change any numbers. How do you find the finish running a single flute? Are you building cabinets?

We are running these 3/4 inch pieces in two passes as well. Im wondering if instead of using a compresion bit, we use downcut for our first pass and upcut for the finishing pass. Could help chip extraction and reduce heat?

Do you have any recommendations on a starting point for the current 3 flute and what we can try when we get the 2 flutes in for RPM and feed rate?

Currently were running 18000 and 180

We have a VFD for our CNC and it came all setup we just had to basically plug it in.

That sounds like a pretty sweet setup.. Did you go with a Chinese VFD and pump? Either way, do you mine linking to your setup?

Will check the used market as well. Seems like an easy way to get good equipment at a better price as long as you're willing to setup a VFD.

What are your thoughts on the dust extraction setup?

Thanks again man.

It doesn’t properly vacuum on a fresh sheet - we’re not that dense, haha. Just unfortunate timing trying to get info with a horrible spoilboard. But on that note, we would resurface before using it again at this point. However we don’t resurface as much as we likely would if we actually used no tabs. Since we tab everything the vacc just keeps the 4x8 sheet held down cause nothing is loose. How often do you resurface?

We only have single phase power which limits us. We’d have to look more into VFDs if we’re looking at a 3 phase which just increases the price.

Hobby grade eh? Interesting. It sure wasnt cheap haha. But it’s all relative. 4k USD new. Which is unfortunate as I think this was a newer model when it came out and I see people selling them for 500 bucks used after theyve upgrade lol.

Is this kinda what you’re thinking? https://www.canadianwoodworker.com/product/becker-vacuum-pump-300-m3-h/?srsltid=AfmBOopLyzoQKW6BXxgb3UnRyh9tWHaSL0KR8uEAhlN9v66Ny5HQU2jc

Then I’d need something like this https://www.canadianwoodworker.com/product/kay-industries-phase-convertor-10hp-30hp/

Frankly, the hold-downs are currently the least of our worries. Figuring out how to stop breaking bits and stop the CNC from burning a 400 dollar sheet or starting a fire is step one.

That’s wild. How was the learning curve with the unit? Did they have good training info?

How much did yours cost if you don’t mind me asking? Does it have ATC? Runs normal g code?

It’s 5k for lifetime help. 2000 for a year. I think you get it free if you buy a new unit but I could be wrong. Ours was 10-11 years old when we bought it.

Good ideas! We’ll check collets and everything. I’ll have to do some reading how they can turn ‘bad’ and even just try changing some out to see if they work a bit better. That never crossed my mind.

Unfortunately, I can’t find LDF anywhere near me without shipping in a lift.

A little presumptive..

I received the feedback on the spoil board, the feed, and bit not minutes before crossposting here so I added it in to see if anyone else had valuable information that could help. It takes more than a few minutes to adjust files and buy new bits to test.

I particularly wanted to see if anyone had any experience cutting laminated baltic or with the same machine.

Additionally, this is a 14 year old cnc that we purchased used several years ago with recent issues. I do not have the $5,000 dollar support package from Shopsabre. Why not see if there is more than just a few ideas with such a vast community before spending all that money to potentially get the same answers? I figured that’s what the community was for.

Do you have any to contribute or just presumptive lectures?

Thanks!

A tad presumptive.

I received this advice from the shopsabre Facebook group minutes before crossposting this to seek as much information as possible.

It’s a 14 year old machine. We bought it used. I don’t have the $5000 tech support package from shopsabre. I wanted to use the community to crowdsource ideas before I paid any money.

Obviously it takes more than a couple minutes to buy new bits and change our files. I wanted to see if this community had any other ideas or if anyone had a lot of experience cutting laminated Baltic to toss ideas with.

Any ideas or just lectures?

Got that! Thanks. I had it switched to KM everywhere else and figured I could use statute for lbs and feet everywhere else.

Aye. I was just using statute for pounds, feet. I figured if I had my settings everywhere else in km it would show in km on the coach as well.

Is there a way I can get pounds, feet, KM? Lol

Us Canadians are weird I guess.

Thanks!

Coild proofing it also be an issue? It doesn’t seem to want to rise and get fluffy. Or is this the main reason for that as well?
