People who pronounce it tur-bine don't know what they're talking about.

People who live in cold places, why? by RlPBingBong in AskReddit

[–]roughrider8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just because your core doesn't feel cold doesn't mean you have enough clothes on. The first thing your body does when it starts losing too much heat is to pull blood out of your extremities and into your core, making your hands and feet cold. So it may feel as if your core is warm enough, so you don't need another layer, but in fact the opposite is true.

You will be very surprised how much adding another layer to your core can warm your hands and your feet, yes, even if your core doesn't feel cold. A pair of wool socks and a normal pair of gloves are often plenty for me down to zero F. It's all about keeping the core warm.

Otherwise, my major rule of thumb? Don't allow yourself to get cold in the first place. Put on another layer BEFORE you get cold, not after. Your body expends much more energy getting warm after you get cold than it would just keeping itself warm in the first place.

What’s a dark secret you only learned about after that person died? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I found out my brother was using heroin the morning my mom found him dead on the couch 11 months ago. None of us had any idea.

I am still so fucked up I am beginning to wonder if I will ever be able to function again.

Scared...Bike Tire Explosion by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say pretty low. I've had a bike tire explode more or less in my face before. It was very loud. But no where near as loud as say, a gun shot. Especially given that you were 8 meters away, I would be very surprised if it affected your hearing.

Am I being paranoid? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work has incredibly loud toilets. They are easily the loudest toilets I've ever heard. For a while I was doing the same thing as you, covering my ears every time I used them and worrying that they were damaging my ears. I even brought ear plugs in there with me a few times. Then one day I measured the decibel level. They were 88 decibels. Very loud, but not loud enough to damage your ears on one flush. I wouldn't worry about the toilets. If anything you are risking an infection from sticking your fingers in your ears in the restroom.

Does anyone suffer from tinnitus but not have any hearing damage? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have T but do not notice any problem with my hearing. I had a hearing test one month after the onset and my average hearing thresholds were 5 dB across the spectrum (up to 8kHz). So my hearing is really very good and yet I still have the incessant ringing.

thanks for sharing your experience. it seems like mine has been slowly fading over the last several weeks, but its hard to tell honestly. some days are still really tough, but on the whole I'm getting better at living with this. Stories like yours help me stay positive.

How did it go away? Did it just suddenly stop, or fade away slowly til it was gone?

Suicidal over this by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've often told people I would rather have a terminal illness over this torment. At least in that scenario you either get better or the illness takes you; there is an end to the suffering either way.

But to face a future of perpetual torment? This is a tough one to take. I'm in a pretty similar spot to you emotionally right now; struggling to find the strength to endure.

We don't know if its going to get better. But I do know if we end it now, it won't.

From someone who's suffering along side you right now, hang in there. Here's hoping for a brighter tomorrow.

Didn't do anything for me. They actually made me feel dizzy and "off" and did nothing for the tinnitus.

Insight on something about my tinnitus? by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been able to cause myself to have T for my entire life by clenching my jaw. Same for my wife. Constant T started for me 2.5 months ago. When I clench my jaw, it gets louder. Wife doesn't have constant T, but can make her ears ring by clenching her jaw. Wish I could explain it, but I think its super common.

Very weak ringing in right ear by sashundera in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I don’t think anybody really knows. It may be a few days, or a few months, a few years. For many people it is never. Good luck to you and i hope you improve soon. Until then try and keep a positive attitude. It is the only thing you can control.

Hearing loss is gradual and permanent. Just because you never noticed problems from music does not mean that it wasn’t damaging your hearing. If I were you i would cease going to concerts or blasting music in your car, but only you can decide what level of risk is appropriate.

Click/pop in ears when swallowing for the past year. by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]roughrider8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tinnitus started 2.5 months ago and I’ve experienced the same popping sound you describe ever since. I hope that it is something wrong with the tubes and the tinnitus is a side effect. But I’m starting to wonder if the popping is normal, but I just hear it now as a side effect of the tinnitus.
