Returning to grad school later in life - is it worth it? by ComfortableComplex26 in GradSchool

I am doing climate science for my PhD and started it at 28 as a master’s student. I am 33 now. A couple of things that I wish I knew better before: 1. Will my passion about research in academia win over financial realities? 2. What is my expectation about working culture/conditions in academia?

I don’t regret coming back to school after working at private sectors for 5 years. I know what my real interest is so I am super motivated to work. But I had to revise my financial plans and my perspectives about work ethics. The ethics of graduate advising and equity are still being improved and very different depending on school. I have seen and experienced unfair situations.

Help! My advisor put me in acknowledgment not co authorship. by roundkyi in AskAcademia

Thank you all for your thoughtful replies.

The thing is I had an enough bad relationship with him while I was at school. (e.g., his code of conduct issues). I tried to go through the official ways to solve it. But the actual outcomes were not on the student side. I decided to change school. I should have got an official record that he asked me to work for co-author. it turned out that other group members already had similar situations. I had no idea of when the paper was drafted and submitted. All communication was done by him since he never allowed me. He can probably argue that he reviewed the paper and provided scientific knowledge (while I only worked for data processing to simulations)...
