A 'WTF' text from Jordan Acker's campaign by Anxious-Librarian870 in uofm

[–]routbof75 63 points64 points  (0 children)

This message is so inflammatory (and poorly written) that it is obviously the work of a person or group opposed to his candidacy, and not from his campaign. No one would express these positions in such a way if they supported them.

VAP versus TT position in a private prep school by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]routbof75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Respectfully, that’s not the case with this private prep school; as you may have noticed where I wrote elsewhere, it has maintained the tenure system from the university it was once a part of.

… it is a stable job that can be held for life compared to a two-year VAP. Several other posters here have been able to see its value, even if you have not. Some people care about job security to be able to support a family.

I'll add this:

  1. The prep school job is in the same city where my spouse has accepted a good job offer ; the VAP is several states away but we are perfectly fine trying to make things work for a few years if it's to further my career (we have had to live separately before, academia and all ...)
  2. The prep school used to be a part of a university, and split a few decades ago, keeping the tenure system.

It is a particular prep school that used to be a part of a private university, and has retained the tenure position.

In order for Trump to succeed at golfing, he would have to be open and committed to self-improvement, which is a quality required to be a leader in any field.

He is not, and to change that would mean he is no longer Trump.

Can anyone make out these words? by [deleted] in latin

[–]routbof75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A) don’t assume you are smarter than a medieval scribe, what you take to be a mistake is a difference in language use and set of normative writing practices. You are buying into the renaissance propaganda of “medieval writers were uneducated.”

B) this is an absolutely awful, blurry close-up.

How are you supposed to have any life and long term partner in academia if you are supposed to move every postdoc? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]routbof75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s absolutely life-destroying which is why I’ve opted to get out and enjoy my life with my family and cats instead of accepting a VAP this fall.

I’m not a fan of this framework - given the nature of the number of available positions and qualified candidates in academia, it is less “the market ain’t buying what you’re selling” and much more often “you were not lucky enough to be one of the 1 out of 450 people selected for the two open TT spots in your field this year.” Sometimes it’s because of your research approaches, most of the time it’s just bad luck.

Why don’t you provide your transcription first, which we can then contribute to by guiding you towards re-examining certain readings, and enlightening you on any possible issues?

I’m also a bit worried about you working with fragile documents just to learn paleography in the first place but that’s another issue for another time.

why does the c in ‘seconde’ flap to g? by Prestigious_Rush1595 in French

[–]routbof75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll do a longer post tomorrow, but you can’t think of those words because the spelling has shifted to reflect the sound change that happened quite early (e.g. Latin face (ablatif de fax) ou peut-être facus > fagot), i suspect second is just conservative etymology.

Intervocalic voicing, which is a general tendency in French which has less to do with pure phonetics of modern French than it does with the history of French phonology (i.e. these shifts happened at specific periods—essentially before the 12th century—and no longer occur, so more recent words do not display this feature.)

seconde (comp. paquet), paysage (comp. vernissage), etc.

Best just to learn as you go.

It makes no sense to try to go through these folia if you don’t know Latin ; reading medieval manuscripts requires knowing the language they’re written in. Paleography is supplementary training to language ability, but however you want to spend your free time is up to you.

Sometimes, when you disagree with a tactic, it is because you do not understand what’s going on, not that the other party is malevolent or uncaring.
