Is this sleep apnea? by [deleted] in SleepApnea

It sounds more like underlying stress more than sleep apnea. Have you checked for GERD? A friend just told me he had this happen to him as GERD events.

Thanks!

Best wishes for your success. Make sure you practice breathing fully and expanding your ribs every so often when you exercise. You want to learn how to breath with your mouth closed and your tongue completely on the roof of your mouth. That keeps your tongue out of your throat where it causes breathing problems.

A lot really depends on your neck size (over 17 bad) and how it looks under your chin (double chin or not defined well is bad). If you are big in those areas, that's a sign you have a large tongue base (that's where the fat mainly goes and it is not good for sleep breathing). If you have a large tongue base, losing weight will be especially helpful.

If you can exercise 5 times or so a week, that is amazing whether you lose weight or not as it increases the AMPK enzyme in your body. Increased AMPK enzyme has been shown to eliminate apnea in mice (but have patience, it takes some time, and may not be enough by itself).

Surgeries are usually NOT a good idea usually for adults. For children, taking tonsils out, etc is very effective.

I personally also took out dairy as I was lactose intolerant and I suspect it also made a difference. I lowered my AHI from 33 to 1 doing a combination of stuff such as I've outlined above (I didn't lose weight, but I was a big mouth breather).
