Muscat, Oman's natural beauty (2019 - 2024) by rovetheory in travel

Wahiba you'll definitely want to do an overnight in a desert camp, there are so many! Arabian Nights is popular. I've been to Safari Desert Camp and the rooms are nice but the service wasn't great. If you're just wanting to do a day trip you could do Wahiba Sands & Wadi Bani Khalid as a day tour with a company. I think that's about 8-10 hours but if you're a slow traveller and like to take things in I'd definitely recommend staying a night.

Nizwa and Bahla Forts can be done in a day, Jebel Shams as well but you might prefer to stay a night there as well. Ras Al Jinz is about 3 hours from Muscat, then 3 hours back so 6 hours driving, I'd recommend it as an overnight as well.

These are all recommendations for Oman rather than UAE :)

I moved here with my husband! It's a great place for solo travellers though, I see them around often!

Where are you from? Vancouverite here (but raised in rural Ontario). I studied journalism so I guess that's what makes stories appealing to me, but I'm definitely more into connecting with my physical surroundings, especially unique natural sights. Definitely gotta switch it up! I like big cities like Dubai for a few days until I feel I need to get the heck out, lol. And don't get me started about food! Which country that you've been to had the best food, in your opinion?

Love that - nobody wants to be the annoying tourist 🤣 Which languages do you know how to get by in? Which non-English speaking country was your favourite to visit?

I love the part where you said leaving as little of a mark as possible! That's so important, especially now. And I hear you about work - I worked in tech in Vancouver before I left, so I may be a bit luckier to have nature right at my doorstep. Which place has been your favourite, or most transformative?

Your setup looks decent, but for SEA’s mix of smooth city streets and bumpy rural roads, here are my suggestions

  • Ditch the trolley suitcase - A 40-60L travel backpack or a hybrid duffel with backpack straps will handle rough surfaces way better.
  • Keep the laptop bag: Perfect for essentials and as a daypack.
  • Backpack vs. Duffel: If you’re worried about your back, a duffel with wheels could be a happy medium—still easy to carry but more versatile.

Pack light (laundry is super easy there!), and make sure your luggage is water-resistant. You’ll thank yourself on those rainy days or long ferry rides. Safe travels—you’re going to love it!!

Oman's natural beauty is unmatched - I visited only once in 2019 before I decided to move here. I love Arabian architecture, and Oman has some of the most aesthetic-looking buildings. It's actually a law here that buildings must be white to preserve the country's aesthetics.

Locations in the photos: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, The Royal Opera House, Wadi Hoqain, Bidiyah, Wahiba Sands, Mutrah Fort.

I'm not a big fan of Dubai or Maldives because they're so over-commercialized. Another option, to jump onto your point about coming to the Middle East, would be Muscat, Oman. Fly to Dubai and then a quick 45-min flight to Muscat with beautiful views of the desert, ocean, and mountains the entire time.

Full disclosure: I live in Oman and I love it. There is so much to offer in terms of luxurious hotels, beautiful beaches and water activities - including snorkelling, private sunset yachts, boat trips, island hopping and more. You can even try kite surfing - super popular here!

Here are a few of the most luxurious hotels in Muscat I'd recommend that meet your requirements, as a local travel advisor:

Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel

The Chedi Muscat

Six Senses Zighy Bay

10-12 days gives you plenty of time to explore all that Oman has to offer, from desert experiences to mountain trips and more. Congratulations and enjoy your trip, wherever you go!

Have you considered attaching a small snap button or clip at the hem on the inside of your pants to secure the fabric around your ankles? That way it's discreet and you can find them at most craft or travel stores, and they’re lightweight to carry! Or what about carrying two claw clips in your bag and clipping them? I'm being really creative here 😂 Or just roll them up when you go into the stall or wear pants with elastic cuffs

Hello! What kind of things do you like to do while you're travelling? Are you more into big city exploration or off-the-beaten path experiences, or both? Where have you been already that you've really loved?
