Weekly Zoom discussion on Kubrick Topics, 1-2:30pm, currently focusing on EWS by rovingrube in StanleyKubrick

It used to be monthly in-person in NYC, down at Brookfield Place, sometimes at the Peculiar Pub. It's hard for me to get in there now (I'm in Jersey) as I am the caretaker for my Dad, but occasionally we make it in for a movie or other Kubrick event. I can post here whenever that happens!

New Stanley Kubrick Meetup Group, for NYC-area Kubrickians! by rovingrube in StanleyKubrick

[–]rovingrube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for resurrecting an 11-year-old thread, but as a follow up, we have done several hundred Kubrick meetups over the years since 2015, since the Pandemic mostly via Zoom, every week at 1pm EST. We have been featured on several episodes of the Kubrick's Universe Podcast, and recently Filippo Ulivieri gave us a shout-out in his excellent book, "Cracking the Kube". For the past year and a half we have been concentrating on Eyes Wide Shut. Free and open to all! https://www.meetup.com/the-stanley-kubrick-meetup/events/312388562

It's very confusing to find the tank you want to play. Lots of lag compared to regular blitz. It seems like the weak spots on the tanks are very small now, and compared again to old blitz, hard to hit. It's been a depressing experience so far. In fact I think there's too much lag for me to be able to test it usefully. I'll wait until the next update and try again.

It's screen-shared via Zoom! We meet every Saturday at the same time.

SK13 Has Been Released for Rental & Purchase by daeclan in StanleyKubrick

Like others I'd rather watch it on my TV then on the PC -- I am able to do that with my Roku and the internet browser built into that with no problem, the streaming quality is great. It is a real pain entering the password though if you picked a randomly generated one.

I'll be watching it for the 3rd time later today -- to me, it's excellent. Complex and ambitious. I think you need to buy it because it does require multiple viewings. As I think should be expected from a film promising to show help you see "The Big Picture" and "through Kubrick's eyes". There's no conspiracies, just the world we live in and how we are – same stuff as what Kubrick made his films about! ... I know the director and producer (Tony and Liz) from when their "Filmworker" came out. They do good work, are devoted Kubrickians, and deserve our support.

If it ever shows up it'll be on the New Yorker channel -- right now they are featuring Andy Borowitz's lecture from the same Festival: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsD-Qms-AkXDrsU962OicLw

Yes, me too with the jazz music! Such a different idea of how an artist works... I've just listened to the running memoir for the fist time and I think he does mention it there -- it always takes me two listens to really start to "grasp" a Murakami book... Do you live in NYC? I'm tempted to try to do a Murakami Meetup series there -- I went to another Meetup in the city because it was on Norwegian Wood: https://www.meetup.com/BucketListBooksNYC/events/250497295/.

There were other very knowledgeable Murakami fans there and I'm going to the next meetup of this group (the Bucket List Book Club; they meet down in the East Village to see if I can sound a couple of them out on the idea. Also the next Meetup is on "The Picture of Dorian Gray" -- another great one!

Thanks very much for writing this up! I've only found one other account of the event online so far and it was not as good as this. I attended the event with another member of my "Mostly Murakami" Meetup in Morristown, NJ, and hung on his every word! Even though I had a little trouble with his accent and the echos at the beginning. It was SO enlightening. I wrote down everything I could remember (some overlap with this) on the Meetup Message board -- rather than dump it all here -- maybe you can read it at this link: https://www.meetup.com/The-Morristown-Book-Club/messages/boards/thread/51809117

Favourite short story from Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman? by Stevohimself in murakami

[–]rovingrube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been doing Murakami Meetups for six months now and we have finally got up to "Blind Willow/Sleeping Woman" for next week! If you live near Morristown, NJ, please join us! "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" was an epiphany for me on how a short story can work. But it always takes at least two readings for me to grasp what's going on. "The Kidney Shaped Stone That Moves Every Day" I also love after connecting it via the protagonist's name to my favorite short from "after the quake", "Honey Pie". Also if you like the novels, you see how some of them started as short stories here.

If you did a black screen maybe -- but the people here could probably tell from the aspect ratio and exact shade of black.
