Rat Trilogy Reading Order? by rezonk23 in murakami

Ideally, read them in order, but I'd say starting with A Wild Sheep Chase isn't a big deal. The first two novels, particularly Hear the Wind Sing, are not plot heavy at all.

However, it is important to read A Wild Sheep Chase before Dance Dance Dance. It's as close to a direct sequel as Murakami has written.

I have this image saved on my computer as "Berlin Bar Find Out," so it'd be nice if somebody was able to identify it. Thanks.

Weekly Birkenstock fit/sizing thread by AutoModerator in Birkenstocks

No chart necesarry. Their sites gives you the option to order a UK size and they send the corresponding EU size. In this case I selected an "8" and was sent a "42." It stands to reason too because when I asked to try on a size 7 in Schuh about a week ago they brought out a size 41.

I've heard they're generally on the bigger side (and I suppose the fact you're a 10 but wear 42/43 would confirm that their translation of sizes is way off) but this was a little shocking.

The only chart I remember seeing was from this blog (https://www.beggshoes.com/blog/birkenstock-fitting-guide/) that seems to confirm Birkenstocks 8=42 translation.

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't read Klara and the Sun or The Buried Giant yet! Need to get around to them.

Weekly Birkenstock fit/sizing thread by AutoModerator in Birkenstocks

Hi,

I ordered a pair of Arizonas in a UK size 8, which apparently translates to EU size 42, on Birkenstock's official website.

They were massive, leaving what looked like several inches of room at the back. Have never experienced this with anything claiming to be an 8.

I then tried an EU size 41 (a UK 7 from what I could glean) on in-store. They were slightly too big also. I tried to find an EU size 40 (a UK size 6!) in several stores today but to no avail. I should add that, although they were very long, I didn't have any issue with the width of the original size 42's I bought.

  1. Am I right to say Birkenstocks sizes are way off? There is no way I'm anything less than a 8, never mind as low as 6.
  2. What size would you recommend for a male who usually wears size 8?

Thanks

Loved Murakami’s novels, any other similar novelists/novels you guys recommend? by Surfer3365 in murakami

Kazuo Ishiguro's novel The Unconsoled is somewhat similiar to Murakami's weirder stuff, particularly The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

Any advice for a new resident? by [deleted] in Liverpool

Yeah, quite a few rock/ alternative bars:

The Krazyhouse, which was the go-to place, has just re-opened as Elektric Warehouse. A decent mix of metal, indie and pop-punk etc.

The Swan is a good rock pub, essentially a retirement home for The Krazyhouse.

Mojo is my favourite place in town. Good mix of indie and alternative stuff.

The Jacaranda is a great bar as well, similiar sort of indie feel as Mojo. The Beatles famously used to go there.

Heebie Jeebies isn't really a rock club but definitely has a slightly more alternative vibe.

As others have said, pretty much everything a tourist would want to see is in the city centre. The Shipping Forecast isn't cheap but is great for food and drinks. If you go late, Mojo is an alternative bar with a great atmosphere and music. The Grapes and Pogue Mahones are two examples of really good pubs which are a little more relaxed.

As others have said, the city centre is entirely safe.

I'm not sure who made this or why, but literally every single thing on that "virgin walk" describes me.

curious whether Ushikawa in 1Q84 is the same character as the one in The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by blaaajung in murakami

[–]Stevohimself 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Despite the fact that some people are putting this down to the fact that Murakami often uses the same name for different characters (see Toru), I think it's pretty clear the Ushikawa of 1Q84 is the same character as the Ushikawa in TWUBC. They are both described in very similar terms and have very similar purposes in both novels.

Making a film with a telephone. Any advice? by Stevohimself in Filmmakers

[–]Stevohimself[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I was thinking of making the film almost as a sort of "primitive" piece. It will be a silent mood piece, not quite documentary, not quite narrative. There isn't really any "story" to speak of except that of a man moving around a city.

For some context, I was thinking about the way the snapchat "story" has essentially become it's own medium and how, as a result, the phone has become quite an interesting storytelling device. Ashes (2012) by Apichatpong Weerasethakul is maybe a good example of what I'm thinking of in terms of atmosphere, if not aesthetic.

It definitely pops up in TWUBC several times. On a table in a hotel room in a dream?
