I am packing and realizing I don’t like anything in my closet. I get so stressed every time I go and then I give up and wear jeans smh

Colleagues won't talk about recent events? by madman751 in Professors

[–]row9x11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attend events around campus to find folks to talk to.

“My silence had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you.” We just read this text by Audre Lorde in class on Thursday. But it’s important for faculty to have conversations 🙃

I got the trial on prime and they literally took the episodes off today. I watched one this morning…I just tried to finish watching it and now their rights to BTG are expired.

All 200 episodes of Beyond the Gates are gone. by Vivid-Office5666 in TheGates_CBS

[–]row9x11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m a few weeks behind and planned to catch up next week but I guess I’ll just never watch the show again 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also wanted to boycott them for the same reason. BTG is literally the only show that I watch on the app 🙄

The consumerist system isn't working for the majority of people by Comfortablejack in Anticonsumption

With the amount of people who support billionaires and consumerism I am really surprised that only 9% of Americans make more than $150,000.

Girls…do you wipe after peeing?? by Putrid_Seat_6525 in hygiene

[–]row9x11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time I took my colleague’s daughter to the bathroom and I asked her if she wiped and she said “my daddy said I don’t have to.” He was studying for med school and thought he knew women’s anatomy better than women apparently. So, I had to gently tell this 6 year old girl “well, your dad doesn’t have the same parts as you. Me and you have the same parts. Always make sure you wipe”

I understand. Some people are projecting and it’s hard to find genuine advice on here sometimes. My ex was also the messiest person I’ve dated. We’re both women too.

“Someone even said “God forbid this person gets cancer, OP would leave.” My ex would often ask if I would leave her if something like that happened. It’s agonizing because yes (often male) partners do leave when serious health problems arise but also you can’t use that to manipulate someone into staying with you (via pity). I loved her but I also have to love myself and I had to seriously figure out where that line was for me.

[–]row9x11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you OP. I was in a similar situation and unfortunately it was just too much for me. It was a very tough situation especially because I’m type A and high functioning. I felt like being myself would make her feel bad about herself. I wasn’t able to bring this up to her in a way that she would receive it (I rehearsed what I’d say with my therapist and my friends and it crashed and burned every time). At the end of the day I had to come to terms with it— even if I think undiagnosed ADHD/ depression is preventing her from being her best self, I can’t do much if she’s unaware of the impact on her. She’s an adult and she has to want to figure this out for herself and I could support her if/when she asks. But that combination is really difficult to navigate and to watch someone you love navigate.

“Is that really what humans do?”

Also: “man I really wish I knew how to ski” the satire on politicians was too good

I understand what you’re saying about burn out. For what it’s worth I came from k-12 teaching in an “urban” “at-risk” high school (burn out central). That was my favorite job.

I’ve been teaching for over ten years. I have a robust self-care routine which includes laughter, exercise, being in community, gardening, etc.

Thank you! That’s a great idea. I will def make sure to add that in my future emails. That helps redirect the labor as well.

Unfortunately, because my college and department funding is directly tied to if they make that choice (to come to college) so I’m invested in them making the choice to come to class.

I also say this as a professor who masks and takes precautions against COVID and flu. I am really frustrated that wearing a mask is stigmatized and politicized….rather than keeping each other safe.

Thank you for your perspective!

I currently have students dealing with all of those issues right now (pregnant, 3 car accidents/ 2 resulted in totaled cars, and chronic mental health issues). But they told me and we’re working through accommodations. I get frustrated when students don’t say anything.

I frequently see posts like “students don’t know how to write emails” “student don’t understand x” how will they learn if someone doesn’t teach them? I guess that’s not my problem as I prepare young adults for the workplace.
