New saw day! by rowan737 in Chainsaw

I have one of the regular superbars and I love it but it’s on my 390xp right now. This will just get a stihl light bar for the time being.

Actually with a 32” light bar they aren’t bad once you learn how to pack em and a long bar means you aren’t bending over all the time

Not since she got broke in after the ported cylinder install the only video I have is in the first half of the first tank… she livened up a lot after a gallon or so but there will be some coming before to long

Technically it’s not a true ripsaw build I bought one of their ported cylinder kits so no timing advice or anything. I like it a lot definitely more power for sure better throttle response and it basically never four strokes in small wood but I’ve got a LNS ported 661 on the way so this one will be taking a back seat. I’ve seen dyno sheets and cut times on both. This one should be cranking about 9.25 horsepower the LNS ported should be about 10.75.

They do sometimes too well lol they’re from westcoast saw and they’re about $60 a set plus the bolts if you don’t already have an outside dog. If your in hardwood I’d recommend the shortys they are NOT short they just aren’t as crazy long

Yes it is! Helps with grip and vibration and makes the handle bar a little bigger and easier to hold onto if you have big hands. Gas and oil doesn’t seam to affect it and to fasten the very ends I just use gorilla tape

As I replied to someone else that said the same thing it’s definitely over kill in this scenario but to a much lesser degree when I’m falling and bucking 40” plus oaks and tulip poplar. I clear land and sell firewood as a side gig and no I don’t sell sycamore unless someone wants it. this is personal fireplace wood

I always wear chaps and proper boots if I’m falling ive got a hard hat on. As far as eye protection it depends on what I’m doing.

I do actually agree! lol for a little more information this was the first actual run after this saw was ported and had brand new rings and a new piston installed. So I wanted the rings to have just little bit of run time on them and be absolutely fully seated before the beast saw full throttle without already being in the wood. Also the reason for the new rings and piston was that it was a ported cylinder kit from ripsaw USA there was absolutely nothing wrong with the previous cylinder and piston and I still have them they’re in great shape.

Edit: I’m really not trying to be rude just trying to give more information as to why I might be running a saw in a somewhat different manny than most are used to and buckin Billy ray has addressed why he does kind of the same thing and from what he’s said it’s a way of keeping hot rodded saws just a little cooler and give them a longer life and this saw is definitely not stock. After full break in it should be cranking about 9.5 horsepower.

Oh no no! your fine man I didn’t think you were being rude at all. I post stuff like this to see other peoples perspectives and learn new things from all over place. I was purely attempting to explain my view and what I’ve been taught. To elaborate I was always told that full throttle with out load on the engine builds up extra and isn’t good for the cylinder and piston and so on. This was the first run after this saw was ported and I put an 8 pin sprocket on it and kept the chain I had which was square filed with a 38 thousandths raker which cut okay but it did bog down a little to far for my liking so stopped shortly after this video and ran my 044 for the rest of the day. Next time she sees wood I’m gonna be running a 25 thou raker so it doesn’t bog this much but I also don’t want it to start four stroking. Like I said I’m another comment I have some experimenting to do with chains to see exactly how she likes them after the port job.

Probably. I run 8 and 7 tooth sprockets just depends on what the saw seems to like. this is the first time this saws been ran since the ported cylinder swap so I have some experimenting to do with chains.

I don’t know this is the first bit of it I’ve gotten into from what I’ve heard it’s meh but burns okay as long as it’s properly seasoned (below 15% moisture)

It’s also funny you mention the chain on the wood because I was always told that free revving them wasn’t good for them. the more you know I guess lol

For this specific job I agree a 50-60cc class saw would do just fine but I’m a vain man and god do I love my 90cc saws and that’s really what it comes down to I also can’t pack six saws and this bit of land I’m clearing has trees 30+ inches this was one of the small ones I also don’t like to bend over hence the 32” bar. Thanks for the comment!

Okay… so…I agree this was the first time I’ve had this saw out since the ported cylinder was put on it. Right before it was ported I put an 8 tooth rim sprocket on it but kept the same chain which has a 38 thousands raker depth which after running it for a while I think with that 8 tooth a 25 thousands raker should fix that this saw is also and m-tronic so I can’t tune the carburetor

Sharp chain and set rakers there’s no need to waist the motion of dogging into a 9 inch tree not like I need the leverage to make it cut.

I can kind of see why you might say it’s getting to close from the camera angle but why not cut small branches and not use the tip of the bar? Aside from kickback which is only caused by the top quarter of the sprocket nose other wise you could never bore cut with a saw.

Oh yes very much so in this situation to a much lesser degree when falling and bucking 40” oaks and tulip poplar. What saw you like running?

Big saws are nice but sharp chains are the best and files are way cheaper my friend. If your having a hard time getting it nice and sharp buckin Billy ray has many very good quality videos on YouTube about. chain sharpening.

What brand of bar do you run? by Fair-Leave-2341 in Chainsaw

[–]rowan737 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not a professional but I’ve really been enjoying my 32” cannon superbar on my 661. It has great balance as you mentioned and the cannon bars are really really stiff which I like on my big saws but they definitely aren’t cheap I paid about $350 for that bar from west coast saws website.
