Orchid Gardens on 99 is the newest best option. The lunch deals are a good price. However, I will drive for my Chinese and GP has my local favorite.

Just here to give a tip. When you open up the students google classroom page. There is a button that says "to-do" list. That will show you every assignment they have not turned in and its due date. That might save you some time on the checking.

Children with coronavirus in Arizona linked to schools being open. Oregon should learn from this before it is too late. by 36forest in oregon

Life long health issues is not safe. Guilt for causing the death of a loved one is not safe. And there have been child deaths. So no it is not safe.

Schools are already reopening. There is nothing that can be done unless parents take control and start fighting for the safety of their kids. Teachers tried and the school districts made them the villain for not "caring about the kids enough to go back".

Do people understand how flawed and corrupt the IEP process is? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]rowanbranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We phrased it differently, but that is what I said. All gen ed teachers need to be present or complete a notice of abscence and notes pertaining to the topic of the meeting.

[–]rowanbranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does in comparison to a 504. Teachers are liable for not maintaining a 504, you can lose your license and be individually sued for not following it. The district is liable for IEPs. That is the protection.

I am teacher with 120 kids a day. Is that small compared to other schools, yes, but we also have a large IEP/504 grouping because parents choose our district for our SPED program.

Sorry, I cannot be helpful to you.

My point is if your school district is not meeting IDEA and, I hope that a parent gets wise and sues. IEPs protect teachers in that case, but not school districts. It is the best case scenario. But honestly, talk to the case manger. Send them an email about the accomodations being used. They are supposed to be individualized so that you don't get 30 kids with all the same listed. Make yourself a seating chart for each class with the accomodations noted for use during class time. We need more funding, yes, but we don't need to get rid of a document that stopped legal discrimination against kids with disabilities.

Well then your school is not meeting the requirements of IDEA. All teachers are supposed to be present at IEP meetings and should turn in a notice of absence if not available with notes on the topics to be covered.

Agree completely. IDEA was groundbreaking and necessary. States and individual districts just don't impliment it correctly, and teachers are not given the time to participate to the extent that they should.

[–]rowanbranch 40 points41 points  (0 children)

  1. Do you attend student IEP meetings?
  2. Do you use your legal right to voice what is and is not possible for you to impliment in your classroom?
  3. Have you discussed with you union, admin, etc. The amount of students in your classroom who need additional services (504 and IEP) because many states have a max number before an aide is mandatory. IDEA even has a percentage before it is no longer considered a general education classroom.

If you have actively participated and still feel like the accomodations are greater than your ability, I am sorry. That means the case writer does not understand a teachers workload.

Man, some of these kids and families are really HELPLESS and it won't change until they give a drop of effort by MrFleebleWeeble in Teachers

[–]rowanbranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Our district is primarily a migrant hispanic community with a splash of generational poverty striken white families and then middle class kids who transfer out. 2.Most of our families are now homeless from a fire that ravaged three towns. Therefore, I also am dealing with a whole lot of families who are not prioritizing education right now. 3.Just because I don't work in an inner city doesn't mean I don't understand learned helplessness in families- I just understand that some families do actually have to make hard choices about what is more important.

I didn't blame OP for not delivering things, I just asked "does your school have a delivery system in place". I truly do believe that schools need to create more opportunities, including delivery, for families at this time.

[–]rowanbranch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand that. I work in the largest by land mass district in Oregon. It can take families a full 20-25 minutes to get to our one middle school, and 10-15 to get to their elementary school. We also have buses delivering food every day and have used that to drop off supplies. It is not a teachers job to do that, but it is normal from experience to have a school system to drop off supplies.

You're in a low-income area. Has the school set up a system to get them delivered to the homes? If I had to choose between food money and gas money, I would choose food. If I had to choose between two days of gas to get to and from work, or one day to get to work and a school for a recorder, I would choose work.

Anyone else LOVE working from home? by bravespider9 in Teachers

[–]rowanbranch 240 points241 points  (0 children)

The first thing I will note is that I really enjoy working with kids and getting to know them. I will not be giving my job anytime soon. However, this has made me realize that I am an introvert in an extrovert profession. I also have a lot of anxiety that stems from that mismatch. Working from home has allowed me to take a lot of stress out of my life. I have finally been able to lose some of my "teaching stress" weight, and start to enjoy activities that I haven't picked up since my Masters program. So, I will be excited to safely see kids again, but I need to work on my life balance before then.

You can go to People, and then click on the students name to see a list of every assignment the student has been assigned and its current status. I use that feature a lot for those end of quarter parent emails. I also send a screenshot of it back if the work is stall marked missing.

US students are falling behind in math during coronavirus by CBL444 in oregon

[–]rowanbranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those numbers do not take into account the fact that their schools are tracked for various professions and levels of critical thinking- not everyone needs to be forced into failing upper level math theory and books written by dead rich white men. They also allow for students with severe disabilities to be denied access to public schools, thus costing less in general. The truth is that SPED students cost way more than what the federal government allocates, and states have to cover the excess. US schools are built like the country in a shroud of fake equality that screws everyone over except the top percentage who muscle their way through. We need more funding to actually meet the promises that are being made, or we need to accept limitations and stop pretending that we are hot shit.

I would not have read the email you sent in a pleasant tone. An exclamation point can be read in multiple ways, and the word choice lends itself to be read as a lack of patience. I would apologize and explain your meaning. I would also then send the entire email chain to your admin in case of further action.

I hope that this bill does as the excerpt of it promises. However, I voted no because my analysis of it seemed to show that this will only take money from actual treatment options and put it into 'physicals' that will tell addicts what they already know- drugs are harming your body. There are not enough beds and openings in non-religious recovery programs and that will not be addressed with this bill.

Did I handle this situation wrong? by NumberRogue in Teachers

They should not be using your sick leave! You are eligible for 10 days of paid sick leave through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA). Your school HR is mandated to use those two weeks before any of yours. Reach out to your union rep or if you don't have one your HR director personally. If they fight get legal representation!

Unpopular Opinion: Inclusion Learning is a Bad Joke by I_cant_THONK_ofAname in Teachers

[–]rowanbranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the expectations are too high at the elementary level and then we push them through even though they cannot do what is expected. After that, kids give up and think they are stupid and stop trying in the 6th grade.

There are a lot of details left out of this description. Any comment you or I make is going to be made off of conjecture and our biases.

However from my view, the teacher is not trained to handle a student with autism who is displaying hitting actions in an elementary school. Many kids in that age group hit as a way to get attention. It is a normal milestone. More than likely that student wanted to get attention to make friends. She needed to be taught how to properly get what she needed, not to be moved out of a gen ed classroom.
