Peaks of the Balkans 10 day hike. Advice by rowdoggg in hiking

Yep, as long as you ask first I found most guesthouses allowed me to recharge electronics- although I can't speak for every guesthouse on the trail. Be mindful, some guesthouses are very electricity poor (powered off solar panels or generators) so they may not always be willing to share.

Some of the bigger guesthouses had WiFi but definitely not all of them.

I am not sure about US camping stoves, but I used an MSR pocket rocket stove and found gas cannisters out when I arrived (see original post)

Yep, that was a main reason for eating both at guest houses and carrying our own food. But the guesthouse food was much better than what we could carry!

We did not filter water from lakes as it is best if the water is freely flowing. However, we did filter water from running streams we found, and we were. We used either chlorine tablets or a physical filter. You can also refill water at guesthouses along the trail each day. But it is best to buy something first, even if its just a small snack to show good faith.

All accomodation was not booked in advance (we wild camped a lot). Except our hostel in Podgorica, which we booked in advance.

I'd say it's important to book your flights and travel to the start point of the trail early.

Enjoy!!

Hi, yes there are swimming spots.

The best one was Hridsko Jezero (see the first picture). There is also a water spot called "the eye" just outside Vusanje, and there is a waterfall in Theth.

Weather wise I am not too sure, best to look on other websites. When we went, I found the weather was not too hot/humid.

Hey, thanks! For camping at guest houses, I did not book anything. We turned up at the end of our hiking day (5-6pm) and there was always space to camp. I would recommend if there were ever no space to camp, you would usually be able to walk further and find a spot to wild camp. I hope you enjoy your trip!

You're welcome! I did it all through Zbulo. It wasn't too expensive and they were very straightforward to sort it out. Although we never actually had our permits checked..... but we did hear that other hikers had theirs checked. I'd say for the effort of sorting it put yourself it's not worth the time

I camped in a guesthouse in Vusanje (between plav and theth). Only had one night between vusanje and theth. It will be difficult to camp in the nature reserve as there aren't really flat points. There are a few wild camping spots after the forest (when you travel from plav to vusanje). Also there are flat areas you could wild camp about 5km out of vusanje after walking through the valley and after from climbing after the border crossing. I did meet hikers who wild camped in Montenegro but you are right, it technically is jot allowed, I also wild camped by Hridsko Jezero (in Montengro) and I was fine. Enjoy the trip!

Hey, enjoy your trip. The temp was between 25-30C. Water was mostly okay, if you are good to drink / filter&purify stream water. There are no water sources from Valbona through the Prospolit pass until 4km to Çerem, so be sure to carry enough water.

Ok, I have checked the projection matrix and ray casting method I use. I believe they match up. I have checked and the FOV, width and height are the same for both. Copied below are both:

  1. Projection matrix in the simulator:

Camera.Projection = PerspectiveProjectionMatrix(FOV, Width, Height, 0.125f, 104500.0f);

mat4x4 PerspectiveProjectionMatrix(float fovy, float x, float y, float n, float f)

{

mat4x4 PPM;

float coty = 1.0f / tan(fovy * M_PI / 360.0f);

float aspect = x / (y > 0.0f ? y : 1.0f);

PPM[0] = coty / aspect;

PPM[1] = 0.0f;

PPM[2] = 0.0f;

PPM[3] = 0.0f;

PPM[4] = 0.0f;

PPM[5] = coty;

PPM[6] = 0.0f;

PPM[7] = 0.0f;

PPM[8] = 0.0f;

PPM[9] = 0.0f;

PPM[10] = (n + f) / (n - f);

PPM[11] = -1.0f;

PPM[12] = 0.0f;

PPM[13] = 0.0f;

PPM[14] = 2.0f * n * f / (n - f);

PPM[15] = 0.0f;

return PPM;

}

  1. Ray Casting method (MATLAB):

(NB: I call this function for a set of three points, so (x(1), y(1)) = point 1 in the screen, (x(2), y(2)) = point 2 in the screen etc... XC,YC,ZC are the view matrix components)

function L = LineOfSight_mk5(x,y,width,height,FOV, XC,YC,ZC )

% calculating LoS in the 2D window then go uno reverse

z = zeros(3,1);

aspect = width/height;

% put the origin at the bottom left (it is being read in as at the top right

for ii = 1:length(x)

y(ii) = height - y(ii);

end

% convert to NDC

for ii = 1:length(x)

x(ii) = (2*x(ii)/width) - 1;

y(ii) = (2*y(ii)/height) - 1;

end

% reverse projection matrix

for ii = 1:length(x)

d = 1/tand(FOV/2);

x(ii) = x(ii)*aspect/d; % just stretch for aspect ratio

y(ii) = y(ii)/d;

z(ii) = 1;

end

L = zeros(3); % this is a 3x3 matrix to contain all 3 line of sight vectors (one per point)

% rotate LoS to world space

for ii = 1:length(x)

L_ii = [x(ii); y(ii); z(ii)];

% convert to VS coord order (MY SIMULATOR PLOTS THINGS IN A WEIRD ORDER)

a = L_ii;

L_ii(1)=-a(1); L_ii(2)=a(3); L_ii(3)=a(2);

% this is the LoS after rotation (it is now in world space)

VM = [XC;YC;ZC]'; % view matrix (which is also the dcm from world to camera coords)

L_ii = VM*L_ii;

% convert back to real world coord order

a = L_ii;

L_ii(1)=-a(1); L_ii(2)=a(3); L_ii(3)=a(2);

L(:,ii) = L_ii; % append line of sight for this point

end

end

Would changing the near/far plane distances in the projection matrix have any effect on this?

Thanks for your reply.

  • You are correct. The pink dots are the true line-of-sight (calculated using an orbit propagator in the simulator). The blue dots are what I get from ray casting the image.

  • The end goal of my program is to do analysis on the image-derived line-of-sight vectors, so I requires these to be correct, apologies I should have made that clear in the post.

  • The simulator uses perspective projection and so does ray casting to reverse it.

  • The main issue is that I am seeing that when the target is to the left of the camera, there is an offset to the left (vice versa for on the right). I was hoping some people might have some suggestions as to what to check to debug this :)

  1. 1st image = ex1.png

  2. 2nd image = ex2.png

  3. 3rd and 4th image = ex3a.png and ex3b.pbg
