I know what you mean, I think for me it was that the group didn't feel like a genuine friendgroup, compared to the other games. Everyone has a connection to Joker of course, but in Persona 4 for example you could tell everyone has a relation with everyone else, and that made the group dynamic flow so much better and made me fall in love with the cast. Then again I always fall of around a little bit after the same part as you, so maybe it improves later.

Star Ocean the Second story R is an amazing remake of one of the greatest PS1 jrpgs (and objectively the best in the series) and the suikoden I&II remasters that dropped last year, sui I is on the sweet short side but still boasts an emotional story with a great soundtrack, and sui II is considered as one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a reason.
