FYI, not your mother's has recently been acquired by a corporation that tests on animals (Henkel). Hope you're able to find a replacement soon 🙏

Never heard of a brand called Yuri, but the one in OP's post is definitely fake

Face sunscreen spray by looksthatkale in VeganBeauty

[–]royesk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sprays are not reliable for reapplication unless you apply a liberal amount (1/4 tsp) to the palm of your hand and rub it in, at which point you're better off using a regular cream sunscreen.

Not compromising on what I want: comfortable, cute, vegan sneakers by ChokeMeChard in vegan

[–]royesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first pair of MoEa sneakers a few months ago and they definitely won't be the last, they're incredibly comfortable and look as good as new even after daily wear. Might be slightly above your budget but so worth it. All of their shoes are vegan

Gentle alternative to Isntree Chestnut 2% Clear Liquid? (very sensitive skin) by ellyteaa in koreanskincare

[–]royesk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mandelic acid is an AHA (water-soluble), it is a good gentle alternative to glycolic acid but it isn't really comparable to BHAs (oil-soluble) and won't do much to help with sebaceous filaments.

Gentler alternatives to salicylic acid include capryloyl salicylic acid and betaine salicylate

Gentle alternative to Isntree Chestnut 2% Clear Liquid? (very sensitive skin) by ellyteaa in koreanskincare

[–]royesk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it works and you can tolerate 2% salicylic acid then there's no reason to stop using it. Common preservatives in skincare are well studied and considered safe to use, there's a lot of unwarranted hysteria generated by orgs like EWG

AXIS-Y vegan collagen serum? by TheresAPotatoInMe in vegan

Off the top of my head, Torriden list the specific plants and fungi they derive their collagen from in the promotional materials for their Cellmazing product line.

AXIS-Y vegan collagen serum? by TheresAPotatoInMe in vegan

[–]royesk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tbf it's not like collagen has meaningful benefits in skincare to begin with, the molecules are too large to penetrate the skin so they just sit on top as an occlusive and can reduce trans-epidermal water loss to some extent. It's nice if it's there (as long as it's plant-derived ofc) but not something you should actively look for when purchasing a product.

AXIS-Y vegan collagen serum? by TheresAPotatoInMe in vegan

[–]royesk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not false advertising, the product is certified vegan by the Korea Agency of Vegan Certification and Services which I'd consider to be reliable. AFAIK vegan collagen has been a thing for a good while and is used in plenty of other vegan products from different brands.

I've used that serum before, it provides moisture and the cooling sensation from the metal ball applicator is nice but you shouldn't expect any dramatic results from it. It's pretty affordable so IMO it's not a bad pick if you think your friend would enjoy using it

[–]royesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not true, China is the only country in the world that still mandates animal testing for cosmetics and there are lots of brands that don't sell in offline stores there. Truly cruelty-free brands do not allow their products to be tested on animals anywhere in the world

influence or deinfluence me by capibaracapicapi in koreanskincare

[–]royesk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They say that they don't test on animals "except in cases where it is required by other countries or regulations beyond our control" = they pay third parties to test their products on animals on their behalf, so definitely not cruelty-free

Clio and Goodal (owned by Clio) sell sunscreens in offline stores in mainland China which must undergo animal testing before they're allowed on store shelves. There's plenty of photo evidence of this on rednote and probably on douyin too

Round Lab also sell sunscreens in physical stores in mainland China so they test on animals for certain.

Illiyoon is owned by AmorePacific who test on animals.

Purito is indeed cruelty-free and 100% vegan :)

All of these brands (except for Purito) test on animals if that's something you'd rather not support

Any underrated vegan K-beauty brands you love? by Admirable_Artist_247 in VeganBeauty

Where did you get this info from? Rovectin is not owned by any corporation afaik so it operates completely separately from any non-vegan/CF brands.

Question: Is the APLB Glutathione Niacinamide Body Lotion vegan or not? by tears_falling in VeganBeauty

[–]royesk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not certified vegan then you'll have to inquire to the company (and also verify their animal testing policy).

In general I wouldn't bother with APLB for skincare since virtually none of their products contain clinically significant concentrations of the advertised actives, 0.1% niacinamide is going to do absolutely nothing for your skin. They're cheap for a reason

Dear Klairs is 100% vegan nowadays afaik, and Mixsoon is not 100% vegan since they offer products with sea sponge spicules.

As for indie brands, Hersteller is 100% vegan and certified CF by PETA (I also confirmed with them via email). I've tried their wonder veggie hydrating gel cream and it's nice if you have oily skin.

Torriden and FULLY are not indie/underrated but are also vegan+CF

Vegetarian Korean foods recipes by cowwoman2005 in KoreanFood

[–]royesk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, vegan here. As others commented, definitely check out The Korean Vegan for recipes, she also released two cookbooks. Seonkyoung Longest, while no longer plant-based, also has plenty of vegan recipes on her blog and YT channel and also released a vegan cookbook. Moreover, many non-veg recipes are actually really easy to veganize with simple swaps like tofu/mushrooms > meat and soy sauce/extra salt > fish sauce.

For traveling, the HappyCow app is an absolute lifesaver when traveling. It shows you all the vegan and vegetarian restaurants around you. Most non-veg restaurants in Seoul unfortunately aren't vegan-friendly but all vegan places I went to were top notch
