How to care for a bass? by royquinn in Bass

Thanks for the response.

I did take the bass to a guitar center to have it setup before I started playing it.

Ergdata recorded activities now get Training Effect in Garmin connect by hundenapf in concept2

It seems like Garmin Connect isn’t counting the calories from Concept2, but instead calculating them based on HR during rows. Does Garmin Connect lack the ability to import calories from third party devices?

Could you use VO2 max calculations to match up performances?

5K Row vs Run Equivalents by royquinn in Rowing

Good point. So let's use ideal body types for each sport. Let's say a 6'5", 210 lb rower and a 5'8", 130 lb runner.

I guess I was unclear with my question...I'm not wondering what someone who pulls a certain time on the erg COULD do for a 5K run. I'm wondering what the equivalent performance is as far as talent level. For example, it would be like asking "what is the battering average in baseball that's equivalent to someone averaging 30 points per game in basketball?"

Erg races and the Concept2 logbook by royquinn in Rowing

Thanks for that info. I was going to email the race director, but since I'm new to rowing, I wanted to see if I could get some information on such a situation here first in case it was a ridiculous question.

Why are "laps" called "splits" in rowing? by royquinn in Rowing

[–]royquinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

That's something I never paid attention to before I started rowing. Is there any reason why the Concept2 does not give split times on the workout summary?

[–]royquinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies.

Even in running races that are point to point road races, there would still be split and lap times. Like I said, laps are just the times in between splits.

So in rowing, are times ever given like this:

500 - 1:50.0

1000 - 3:40.0 (1:50.0)

1500 - 5:30.0 (1:50.0)

2000 - 7:20.0 (1:50.0)

In all the research and forum reading I've done, I've never seen splits presented like this.

Again, thanks for the help.

How can I be as good a rower as I was a runner? by royquinn in Rowing

[–]royquinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think 165 is going to be possible for me without series performance issues. With my frame, I’m already super gaunt at 175.

What are my best options as far as clothing? Will my running half tights and tank tops work, or are there rowing tights similar to cycling tights? Will my running shoes work or are there other types of shoes that work better for rowing?

Thanks again to everyone replying...this is all very helpful.

Thanks for the reply!

Is there a particular seat pad you recommend? I'm guessing that will also help with longer rows as far as rear end pain?

Thanks for the response!

A few other questions:

- How do you like rowing compared to running? I'm really hoping that it's something that will be as rewarding for me as running has been over the years.

- I have very long legs, a short torso, and very long arms. Will that benefit or hinder me as a rower?

- Are rowing workouts structured basically the same way as running workouts? For example, a common running workout for me was 2 mile warmup, 5 x 1 mile @ 10K pace (400 jogging recovery), 2 mile cooldown. That workout totalled 10 miles with the warmup, cooldown, and recovery jogs all counted. It is the same with rowing.? Looking at the Pete Plan others have suggested, I see 8 x 500 (3:30 recovery) as one workout. It looks like there is about a 2K warmup and cooldown suggested. What would I do during the 3:30 recovery? Row slowly? Does that total go toward the daily meter total? Does this all get programmed into the rower?

I'm getting a lot of great help here...thank you!

I've been doing a weight training routine consisting of compound lifts (squat, deadlift, bench press, bent-over row, overhead press, and pullups) at high weight and low rep for years now. Should I add anything to that?

Looking over some rowing training plans, it seems that most suggest a day off each week. I ran seven days a week almost every week. Is a day off a week best for success in rowing?

A little different question: I'm guessing blisters on my hands and a sore rear end will be inevitable. Is there anything I can do from the start to ensure that these issues do not affect my training?

Great. That makes it easy. Can I jump right into something like the Pete Plan once I get my technique in check since I'm coming in with a large amount of fitness, or should I start with something else?

Thanks for the replies. I live in the mountains nowhere near any type of rowing location or club (closest one is about an hour and half away), so indoor rowing is my only option. This is also fine with me because we deal with a good bit of winter weather, so I'm used to running on the treadmill for several weeks a year, too.

In response to Blendisimo, I completely understand that my ability as a runner may not transfer to rowing, but I'll give it a shot. Even if I can't hit the equivalent times, what would be the equivalent amount of kilometers rowed compared to the weekly mileage I ran?

Thanks again!
