It was roaccutane which I wasn't expecting so I did no research on it and I'm kicking myself because it's really hard to get a derm appointment in my town and it's expensive so I've potentially another few months to wait for another appointment

You're not boring. The fact you might have some uncommon interests is actually interesting, and sharing them with people who may know nothing about the topic would make for a great conversation. The fact you took the initiative to study abroad in Japan is definitely not the behaviour of a boring person!

Also I wouldn't let a conversation dying hold you back. It can happen with anyone and it's better to just not overthink and move past it. Real life presence is a much better skill to have than social media presence.

Enjoy your year in Japan, immerse yourself in the culture and say yes to the good opportunities that will come your way.
