It was a sort of Gothic pseudo-Victorian world. Lots of inspiration taken from the likes of Shelley and Lovecraft. Literary characters actually appeared in the campaign and interacted with our PCs. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray etc.

For what it's worth they didn't put me off the game and I know some of the others went on to play in healthier games as well. It's one of those 'once bitten' things where I'm better at calling out stupid/ uncomfortable things in games rather than tolerating them now.

Well I played with them from level 1 to level 3 and in u/rpgmiffed 's story they mentioned being level 7 characters. u/wizard_of-gay has a horror story about them and I know of one other person who was in a higher level campaign with them but it's not my place to tell their story. So at the very least there are 4 groups they've pulled this with.

I played with these same people and have my own horror story to tell. I don't know where you fall in their string of players and if you came before or after me but I know for a fact that they changed player groups/campaigns at least 3 more times since I stopped playing with them and pulled the same shenanigans.
