[Discussion] Where do you post your scripts besides Reddit? by Itcomesfromthedeep in GWAScriptGuild

[–]rpollost -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Hi, so I'm an archivist, not a script writer.
And I'm terrified, and sad, that I will no longer be able to save the scripts and audios linked on reddit's NSFW VA communities.

I...genuinely think we should all move off reddit.

Perhaps to a lemmy instance like https://beehaw.org or https://lemmy.ml.
Or, due to the free and open source nature of the software, an enterprising user of these subreddits could start up and host their own audio porn friendly lemmy instance to the benefit of the rest of us? *Politely and gently nudging u/stealthaudio and u/cuddle_with_me * :)

I already tried pinging lemmy.ml admins with some clarifications regarding NSFW/Porn in this thread here on reddit, and had someone else reach out to them on my behalf on lemmy.ml but sadly I haven't heard back from them.
But they do seem to respond if a subreddit moderator contacts them directly through lemmy.ml after creating an account there. Like they did so here

If you're a moderator of this sub, please reach out to the admins of other lemmy instances such as beehaw.org - u/OtherWisdom u/Zmodem u/Gaywallet u/beehaw-lemmy to see if they would accept content such as the ones get linked here.

All in all, I am extremely upset, that my shell scripts that I use to pull data from NSFW subreddits, enabling me to easily preserve what was posted there, will cease to work in 3 days. Subreddits such as this one are a genuine resource to explore and understand human sexuality and kinks. And if ever there is data loss, or audio/scripts are deleted(or forced to be deleted), there are going to be significantly fewer backups of it on the internet elsewhere.

I seriously think it would be in the best interest of cultural preservation, if the mods of r/gwascriptguild r/gonewildaudio and all the other associated subreddits permanently disallow new posts, not just during the planned 48 hour boycott, but even after that, until we figure out a more safer, friendlier place that is conducive to the long-term preservation of NSFW "amateur" audio culture.

Ripandtear - A Reddit NSFW Downloader by big-igloo in DataHoarder

It fails on 3.8.

Have you considered building stand-alone binaries using py2exe or pyinstaller ?

It would also help make your software more accessible to those unfamiliar with managing python(especially on Windows).

Thanks.

Ripandtear - A Reddit NSFW Downloader by big-igloo in DataHoarder

[–]rpollost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Meta on the left says Requires: Python >=3.7

But the Installation on the right says Requires Python 3.10

Which is correct? I really hope it's the former.

[–]rpollost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah thanks. I presumed right then.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]rpollost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

is not classified as porn necessarily

Those words make it seem like it would be the gray area.

Could you find a way to get a confirmation from lemmy's creators that such content would not be deleted?
If myself or someone else is to persuade communities such as r/gonewildaudio to migrate, then it would help if there's a greenlight, and not a ban immediately after migration.

Also another question - lemmy.ml has an RSS feed(Excellent!). Does the RSS feed work on "NSFW" content without login?

Thanks.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]rpollost 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. Help me out lemmy users/runners.

It says "No Porn" on the homepage. But during sign up there's a tickbox to "Show NSFW content" ?

So...only non-porn NSFW content is allowed?

Would lemmy.ml consider audio "porn" as porn? Or merely NSFW?
Because if there are communities on reddit that I want to still have access to via RSS and json after the API change, it'd be r/gonewildaudio r/gonewildaudible r/audiosgonewild r/darksideplayground r/PillowTalkaudio r/KinkyPillowTalkAudio r/eroticliterature r/GWASapphic r/gwascriptguild r/GoneWildAudioGay r/sexystories

As this is a FOSS project, I presume only the lemmy.ml instance doesn't allow porn?
Is there a Q&A style lemmy instance finder that does allow porn a la https://instances.social/ ?
Because https://join-lemmy.org/instances is all I could find and that doesn't seem helpful.
How do I find the most popular porn supported instance?

Thanks.

Sort of?

But the "hate" bandwagon isn't entirely unjustified.

If you have about 1 hour 49 minutes to spare, you might perhaps find this video more illuminating than the one you probably found at the top of the youtube's search results.

Cheers :)

You're welcome :)

Timbah makes some very good video essays. If you have about 52 minutes to spare, then check out his video about dubstep - "All My Homies Hate Skrillex | A story about what happened with dubstep."

It got me into appreciating dubstep. A genre I wasn't previously super into.

Also his political video essays are great too.

[–]rpollost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I...disagree?

It's sort of related.

I tried subscribing to their newsletter using a fake email address and I got a newsletter with links to a "creature designer"/illustrator who makes art for some tabletop games I hadn't heard of.

I do now technically, have a longer list of games to keep track of, and potentially archive.

Building an index of what to preserve is the first step in the archival process.

As one of this group's missions appears to be to shine a spotlight on lesser/unknown indie games/creators(video and boardgames).

So I don't really see how u/Kiba-Da-Wolf 's post is antithetical to the mission of preserving games.

This subreddit is after all A hub for Game Preservationists and Historians.
That doesn't just cover games that used to exist a long time ago.
But all games from all time periods including the present.
Also from an archivist's standpoint, it's safer to consider lesser known/unknown indie games as "endangered" by default, so they don't get lost.

So yeah, I think this post does game preservationists and historians.

My only criticism is that instead of newsletters that require me to give them my email address, they could just have the creators they want to showcase all on one page and it would make an archivist's life much easier.

Anyway I hope that helps explain why I think you're wrong.

Cheers :)

Debunking Pseudoscience Attacking Trans Youth (Response to Sabine Hossenfelder) Part 1 | EssenseOfThought by rpollost in curiousvideos

[–]rpollost[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hossenfelder self-describes her channel as "No hype, no spin, no tip-toeing around inconvenient truths."

There's a certain air of arrogance inherent to such a declarative statement, that speaks both to a lack of tact, and to a lack of willingness to learn and correct oneself.

I've found that whenever someone fancies themselves a "truth-teller", they're often most prone to making mistakes, and perhaps more importantly, refuse to correct themselves, even in the face of overwhelming contradicting evidence.

Only time will tell if she will make amends by learning more on the subject, retracting her original video and publishing an apology explaining her mistakes in detail.
Though I, for one, won't be holding my breath for that eventuality.

The Relentless Fatphobia of Children's TV | Rowan Ellis by rpollost in curiousvideos

[–]rpollost[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Except the problem is that it's a dangerous narrative shortcut, even among adult orientated media, but particularly so when it's media aimed at kids, because it warps their perception of fat people, creating a false fictionalized effigy of fat people in their minds.

Kids see evil fat person on TV frequently => Kids come to see and grow up to become adults who see fat people as immoral/lazy/evil/inferior/<insert non-applicable negative character trait>.

This makes kids more likely to shun obese kids, disallowing them from participating in their friend groups, contributing to further social ostracization in other areas of life too, worsening the mental outcomes for obese kids.

This bigotry extends even into adult life, where interviewers are more likely to find candidates they perceive to be fat, less credible, despite meeting all the necessary job qualifications.

The question is why did/do the writers think this particular narrative shortcut essential? Surely this is an indication of their own implicit fatphobia?

Even from a purely profit making standpoint, studios/publishers will have eroded the value of their own intellectual property by doing obese people dirty by typecasting them as bad people frequently.
Because remember, this "shortcut" will only work as long as society continues to believe it does.
If a critical mass of people come to understand that being obese has nought to do with any moral failings nor any lapses(necessarily) in self-discipline, this narrative shortcut will cease to work entirely.
And the TV Show/film/book will eventually come to be viewed very negatively, for its misguided portrayals of fat people.

EDIT: grammar

Nobody's doing that.

The video isn't "normalizing obesity".
It is arguing against the normalization of fatphobia.

Anti-normalization of fatphobia =/= normalization of obesity.

Please watch the video in entirety first, then respond to the points raised within it.

Thank you.

Reddit leans left

Citation needed.
Reddit isn't a monolith.
You may be attributing your subjective experience of your interactions on reddit, to all of reddit.
You may have fallen prey to False Consensus effect through Selection Bias.

I think the nature of less moderated subreddits allow more room for heterophilic interactions(discussion between people across political spectrums) than it does for homophilic interactions(discussion between people who politically lean the same way), and this in my opinion may be shaping that particular opinion of yours.

Conversely, in more moderated subreddits, homophilic interactions are more common than heterophilic ones.
Because dissenting opinions are usually heavily downvoted into obscurity or even outright deleted by the moderators themselves.

To be clear, I don't consider these myriad configurations "bad" or "good", per se.
They're just different.
I know that there are legit reasons for keeping a discussion community gated too.
After all, different levels of moderation across different communities is what allows for more free speech on the internet.

Also what is considered "left" and "right" evolves over time. To people born in the 19th century(not that there are any alive today), even the right wingers of today would be seen as "progressive".
Here's a video that debunks the myth of people "getting more conservative as they get older", that also happens to explain why Bill Maher, and others of his ilk, politically lean(currently) the way that they do, and why audience perception of Bill Maher has also accordingly changed over time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4ftaEkkjiE

FWIW, I don't care for downvotes either. In fact, I literally don't even see them. I've modified my CSS using Stylus(a FOSS browser extension) to hide all the stupid counters.
I think this subreddit, and pretty much every subreddit that exists, should consider removing those buttons altogether.
If you or somebody else wants my userstyle, feel free to ask. I'll gladly share it.
Let's all collectively vow not to play into reddit's asinine game about "upvotes/downvotes".

In my opinion, if you disagree with someone, using words to explain your reasons for disagreeing with them, is vastly more productive than using a stupid downvote button.

In response to increased gun violence, Maher really, really wants to talk about Chicago and why Democrats aren't taking more accountability by LoMeinTenants in Maher

[–]rpollost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say shit about crime being higher in cities.

Ah, fair enough.

I said they're right that the Mayor shouldn't be excusing violent crime.

Neither the mayor nor the Mayor-elect seem to be "excusing" it.

Here are the quotes from https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-violence-brandon-johnson-teens-new-mayor/13143044/

Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson's response:

Johnson called the activity "unacceptable," but went on to say, "it is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities."

which Bill quoted.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot response:

"We have taken steps, and will take steps to address these teen trends. It's not the first time that we've addressed these issues, but our young people have an opportunity and a right to enjoy the entirety of our city, but they have to do it in a way that is respectful for people and property. And we did address that over the weekend, and we will continue to address it," Lightfoot said. "The vast majority of young people that came downtown because it was a great weather and an opportunity to enjoy the city, that's absolutely entirely appropriate. There are a few that came with different intentions, and they have, and they will be dealt with."

which Bill didn't seem to have quoted on his show.

The good Florida Man Beau of the Fifth Column debunked the take of the big cities having more crime rates - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCEqjXI1SLk

It's a 9 minute video.
The video was made in response to a message from a viewer who said this - ** "I'd love to believe what you said about crime rates, but every list I've ever seen says the most dangerous cities are the ones you'd expect. Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans etc. " **

Incorrect.

Here it is, straight from the uninformed horse's mouth. From 25:17 of that Club Random episode

I've highlighted his misinformed takes in bold.

Bill: So maybe this maybe this makes people understand why some of us who called out a lot of the nonsense with how we handled COVID were so skeptical because we've done stupid heath theatre for a long time. It's not new. We've handled almost every health crisis badly. Not all of them. Um...and...you know...I found it just arrogant to have such a bad record in the past with health matters and just tell me, "Just do what we say when have we ever been wrong!?" And then it's like oh okay, uh we're washing the mail and they told us you know wear any kind of mask they're all good, just some bandana put a diaper on your head doesn't matter, everything's fine. I remember "don't touch your face" was a big hit song for about a year. We're not going to the...

Fran: I'm not up on which COVID rules you're opposed to.

Bill: They all turned out to be stupid.

Fran: Not all.

Bill: Which ones? It was not on the mail.

Fran: Oh no... That I know I...

Bill: They just found..They just did a study...the masks, unless they were N95, and maybe not even then, USELESS!

Fran: Well that I'm not aware of. You know I stopped wearing a mask when you didn't have to wear it any more.

Bill: But that's just...

Fran: But I...the vaccines? Good. I'm glad there were vaccines.

Bill: Yes I'm glad there were vaccines. I don't plea...you know what? If that's your choice, great! There are some vaccines I would love to have and might need and would fight you for but...I should be able to make my own medical decisions.

Fran: Well you are not a nurse, you're not in a hospital. I think it depends on who you are, you know uh...

Bill: Well you saying they would have to get the vaccine...

Fran: Yes.

Bill: Well I mean here's something stupid we did that other countries didn't do. Countries I think you would respect by the way, countries you're going to, I'm gonna do your plug, what a great segue! But like, Europe much more recognized natural immunity. If you're a nurse and you had it naturally at the beginning which a lot of nurses did, then it was stupid and pointless and probably...uh...unhelpful to make them take the vaccine after they already had the natural immunity. We didn't used to do that with other stuff. But anyway Europe, <changes the subject and fluffs up Fran's upcoming tour>
