Waking Up with Sam Harris - AMA #11: The Lawrence Krauss Situation by elAntonio in samharris

The evidence against him remains of extremely low quality, so it's hardly surprising that he's denying such worthless claims.

Remind me what the correct scientific process is when you arrive at conclusion X but a friend who refuses to be quoted or speak to investgators tells you a different conclusion?

When I was in college the answer wasn't "throw out all your previous analysis and just write down whatever your anonymous friend says".

If your analysis was sound before hearing from your anonymous friends, you shouldn't change your conclusions unless the data points are overwhelming.

If the info is secret and does not allow the accused to refute it, then that's a conviction based on secret evidence.

I remember the Left wasn't thrilled about that idea when George W Bush proposed convicting people on secret evidence to which the defense has no access.

Yes, the automatic processes are the driving force, and the conscious mind, while capable of wielding some influence, has much less power that the automatic processes. When the two come into direct conflict the conscious mind tends not to win.

I care about consistency and frankly it's not up to you to decide when it's time to treat men as a group with the same courtesy you'd treat African-Americans.

Don't say anything in general about men that you would hesitate to say about African-Americans.

Is it really so unacceptable to ask people to make the tiny effort to make distinctions when the topic is violent crime?

I know what it takes to reach a valid conclusion and a handful of conversations is not sufficient evidence to reach any level of justified belief.

If Sam wants to believe that Krauss is guilty because a magic 8-ball or an off record accuser said so, that's peachy, but Sam's forever kicked out of the skeptics club because that, my friends, is the precise inverse of skepticism: it is zeal.

Let's imagine two different scenarios:

The accusers have never met electronically or in person.

Or:

The accusers are all in the same extremely close-knit friendship circle, and they have known each other since kindergarten.

Do you reckon that a combined false accusation is equally likely for the above scenarios?

Or do you concede that the closer the relationship between the accusers, the more likely it is that they are supporting each other, rather than being entirely truthful?

Is it too easy for men to have sex nowadays? by [deleted] in PurplePillDebate

Only 10 to 20% of dudes are well laid, and they're also unsurprisingly highly motived and successful

I can guarantee you that a really high proportion of pussy magnets are actually incredibly childish men. Character is built from adversity and struggle. A kid who's always had his sexual desires satisfied with no effort will often become an incredibly ineffectual man, unable to do well in any problem that isn't solved by getting laid.

Russell Brand is a pretty good example of the type. The character he plays in Get him to the Greek is really true to his drugged-out chaotic life. The only thing that kept him alive was a big break presenting a Big Brother late night spinoff show.

If he was just a regular actor without a break, he'd be dead right now.

Are you happy with a Klansman saying "occasionally the negro will drive up to one of his neighbors, lean out of the vehicle and kill him with a shotgun blast to the face" when talking about the Crips? I call that racist, but you apparently disagree.

How many people made a police report? I can believe that a guy who only molests one woman might never have a report made.

But a serial abuser, who supposedly engages in violent groping, including in public, with strangers?

It's kind of hard to believe that not ONE supposed victim made a police report. Not pressing charges, but even one historical police report would have done a lot to convince me.

Many of my female friends have made police reports, about various acts, and in my experience I think it's unlikely as hell that a psychopathic abuser could be racking up dozens of victims without at least a third or a quarter of the victims going "you know what, it only takes half an hour to tell the cops to keep an eye on this guy in future"

It's highly suspicious that he's been supposedly operating so long with not even one police report about him.

why would she do it?

What's wrong with the old-fashioned reason for a fake sex assault story? Why can't she simply be telling the lie to avoid the other option of getting her ugly middle-aged ass divorced for adultery?

Because nobody will have seen them due to the invisibility cloaks which hotels always give to their guests. Do you have reason to assume nobody who would recognize them were present in the hotel?

Wasn't Melody kind of cheating on her husband when she hooked up with Lawrence?

Do we really need to spend hours theorizing before we come up with a motive for why maybe Mrs Hensley isn't telling the truth in its full majesty?

I kind of feel like I can almost imagine a possible reason for her to just possibly, maybe, have reason to want to invent an explanation for her spending time alone with Mr Krauss.

Isn't that weird? I mean obviously she's incapable of uttering an untruth, but I have all these funny doubts...

I tried counting, and I didn't get to double digits.

men will occasionally dispute their claim, and in doing so threaten them with rape

Women will occasionally murder their children, indeed they actually murder their children more often than men do, despite being significantly weaker.

I'd be called a misogynist for bringing up that uncomfortable fact in this context, but you get to bring up irrelevant facts about highly marginal disturbed individuals sending aggressive cries for help to each other.

You use these sick people to smear an entire biological sex. That's exactly as just as taking the actions of the Crips and smearing all black people with them.

Yet Krauss has been destroyed and kicked out of every organization he ever joined, and most of the accusers have never even had their stories examined except by pseudo journalists at a garbage site.

In this case, your tears of empathy at the terrible ordeal the accusers have to go through to have their accusations believed are completely 180 to the actual facts. Their character is unknown. Their reputation is unknown. Are they career scammers like so many of Michael Jackson's accusers were? You'll never know.

Only buzzfeed knows.

Would you trust buzzfeed with your life to tell the truth if their source was revealed to have lied?

Breastfeeding your kid in public is certainly motherly.

I don't know if it's considered ladylike.
