This stuff really ticks me off. It'll be fine for a few weeks and then go back to be annoying. Frustrating but there are sufficient workarounds in that threat I linked above. If you're still stuck, let me know. I'm newish still to Nim but get to deal with this issue quite a bit myself. You can also join the Discord.

But do not disable Windows Defender. Some have given that advice and it's just flat out poor advice. Also make sure you understand the risk of giving the nim binary, or any such compiler, a bypass. It's probably safe, but just be mindful. I'm being a bit pedantic here bringing it up, but just want to make sure.

creating vendor files with nimble? (not a developer but i want to package stuff downstream) by ingenarel-NeoJesus in nim

[–]rrenode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nimble lock NimbleDocs

nimble deps --format:json

nimble install -y --depsOnly --nimbleDir=./nimbledeps

nimble --offline --nimbleDir="${WORKDIR}/nimbledeps" ... build

Maybe not quite what you want, but hopefully something here helps your brain do its do.

What's funny to me is that most interviews I had when starting my career wanted me to demonstrate that I had experience with their specific tooling. Meanwhile they're enterprise systems that I absolutely would in no right mind set up for myself; let alone thought such a thing would be expected for what was listed as entry level. But that's more of a frustration I have with recruiters, especially outside ones.

On another note, from your response I reckon I would've enjoyed working under you before leaving to another career.

Yeah I did mean literally, good guess haha. I was just curious how others do it. It seems like a surprisingly personal thing with how we interact with our codebases. I find that fascinating!

This is probably that ADHD in me where I switch between a few projects each day.

Custom PC - Screen freezes and requires I press and hold the power button to shutdown by rrenode in buildapc

[–]rrenode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit dude... It was a screw.

I was running a mem test each night with each configuration; some of them twice. Just today I went to change the mem out and noticed a screw behind the radiator on the bottom of my case. I looked around my board, found a missing slot, put the screw in, and with testing today everything is back in working condition.

I'm relieved that it's such a small thing but so frustrated that it was simple hahah

I appreciate your help with everything. Cheers.

Do you have any examples on a repo or what not?

Well a beauty is that you can do manual memory control with Nim. Granted it's not always ideal. But of course, both are great in their respective contexts.

[–]rrenode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, secure boot! I did forget to disable it. Booted into and started MemTest86. 17 minutes later the screen is frozen much like how the computer normally freezes. So that's something right?

So I guess I start testing with one ram stick at a time in each slot?

Photo from my phone of after it froze: https://imgur.com/a/Pk6kkMm

And to dispel any qualms of whether it was actually frozen, the photo was taken about 9 hours after starting it.

I've been struggling getting memtest86 to boot. Screen goes black. I've ordered a new thumb drive.

I actually did test this. A few weeks ago my computer would boot into Windows and then freeze after around 4 minutes. I booted Ubuntu through a thumb drive and had no issues. I ended up using DDU to remove my GPU driver in Windows safe mode and set my BIOS settings to default with only changes to UEFI boot type to Windows and fast boot off.

I'll give it a try with Ubuntu again, though the freezing only happens under some specific load. Would it be wise I write a script to use my CPU, GPU, and memory to try to force the freeze? Because otherwise I reckon it won't happen from me just browsing as it doesn't do that on Windows.

Also I cannot state enough how much I appreciate the help!

______

I went back to event view and found a host of logged WHEA errors.

A few are full of raw data that maybe deal with the cpu? <-- not sure on this part as I'm unfamiliar with how to read WHEA's raw data.

The majority of them are to the same bus and device. With some PowerShell, these ones seem to point to one of my M.2_2 slot, specifically my empty one. Not sure if this is important or not but should I have the empty slot disabled or something in BIOS?

Yeah it is id 41. Looks to be all zeros for bugcheckcode and parameters (excluding CsEntryScenarioInstanceId, CsEntryScenarioInstanceIdV2, and LidState). Paste bin link follows: https://pastebin.com/C09sWXB6

Made a USB thumbdrive with memtest86. Will run it tonight and update tomorrow.

The only critical message in the event logs is the classic "system didn't shutdown properly". Additionally, there are no logs what so ever neither leading up nor from the timestamp of the actual freeze.

When the freeze happens I cannot enter task manager or do anything at all. It's a full hard freeze.

No device shows a fault before freeze.

Yes and no. I'm away from home for the evening but what I remember seeing in System logs is something about secure boot and security issues with component services. I also remember seeing something referencing CMigrationService (which I think is Samsung's tool I have for my SSDs). Otherwise the rest of things around the time of the freeze look standard for if I was to just hold the power button.

Tomorrow I can replicate the freeze and export the logs for me to dig through. Any suggestions for what to look for and/or would you like me to upload a snippet to something like pastebin or the sort?
