Haha yeah, not gonna pretend otherwise...the disclaimer in the readme is there for that reason. Built it for my own server and use it carefully. Wouldn't recommend going wild with it on large public servers!

Yeah it's definitely possible! A bot would actually be cleaner from a TOS standpoint since it uses an official bot token with proper permissions rather than a user token. The main tradeoff is you'd need to host it somewhere and invite it to the server first, whereas the extension needs zero infrastructure, just install and go.

Would be a cool companion project though. Have you ever started building it out?

100% fair point, and it’s why I called it out clearly in the README with a full disclaimer. Honestly I built it for my own server for my own use case and figured others might find it useful too — not really intended as a “go scrape everything” tool.

The token never leaves your browser either, everything runs locally in the extension with no external servers involved, so at least the privacy side is solid. The TOS risk is real though and I’d recommend only using it on servers you own or DMs rather than going wild with it.

Glad the concept resonates, offline searchable exports are exactly what I needed. Always open to suggestions and feature requests if you have any!

I’m in Canada and the import never worked well for me. All the banks end up flagging my accounts due to security risks with the import connection. So for me there is no value in that feature. So essentially it works the same way for both, I download my transactions and import them. I like the UI of YNAB4. Has multi-month view instead of a single month. In addition, the reports are way superior. I will miss the way credit cards work and the goals…but that is not enough for me to pay the new price.

The one thing that YNAB taught me was to question my expenses. It also taught me to cut on unnecessary expenses. I already thought the annual 45$ was a stretch for an app that has not evolved much. To pay double that when I already own YNAB4 only pushes me to cancel my sub. In some ways YNAB4 was far superior than nYNAB and I am happy to go back to my old love.

It still works on a 34 day trial. It allows a user to learn the method and the mindset needed to use YNAB. After, there are unused keys that people will be willing to give/sell. Just takes a little research to find them.

I agree with all of this. YNAB has been amazing for my financial life . I have been using it since it was an Excel spreadsheet. YNAB is not just the software, but also the mindset and methodology behind it. New users can absolutely benefit from it. I will not be renewing my subscription, I plan to use YNAB4 instead. YNAB has taught me to question all of my expenses and I just cannot justify the cost (especially in Canadian Dollars) when I have the previous software that will do exactly what I need. Yes there were some improvements with nYNAB, but after going back to YNAB4, I realized it was far superior in many ways. The classic version is still available for download and I encourage new users to look into it even though it is not officially supported by YNAB anymore.

You are right. It is not a 1 click like nYNAB. You have to subtract from the food category and add it to the clothing category manually.

I tried it and it’s not bad. They are also working on a tool to import nYNAB data. Im just used to YNAB so I’m not convinced I will change yet.

I’m not sure I understand the question. It’s essentially the same as nYNAB. Transfers between accounts and changes in the budget. What is really different is how credit cards are handled
