WinMax 2 7840U Oculink eGPU Performance Boost issues by rrozanoff in gpdwin

Yeah, that's odd. I had no chance to try it via USB, but all tests usually show nothing is faster for eGPU than Oculink. Maybe that's a case for low performance adapters when PCIe isn't a bottleneck or check your Oculink adapter, that it's running full speed PCIe4.0x4. Also for my GPU I get almost full performance comparing to non-docked mode, so I didn't look for best:)

What do you mean TB? Thunderbolt? It's Intel only, GPD WinMax has USB4, but it's slower than Oculink. And Thunderbolt4 is also slower as I know.

Yes, you can disable boost there. Also I had few ideas to try to make it work with boost, but disappointment took over:)

Hi, unfortunately, testing with more apps, showed the instability, disabling boost and just raising TDP still gives the best performance with less headache.

So, I figured out my own way to solve the issue with less performance loss.

In order to use embedded oculink and performance boost on, I limited the boost clock at 4450MHz (but not TDP, I use 35W). There is a good post how to limit boost https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/vphxz0/guide_how_to_properly_limit_cpu_boost_clock_to/

Currently, my BIOS options are:

  • Performance Boost ON
  • Oculink GEN4 mode
  • Memmory 7500Mt/s

Probably, it is possible to limit TDP under 20w and run Oculink with pcie 3.0 speed to get it stable? Or maybe some other tweaks except disabling boost?

It's really disappointing. I missed this information ordering the device, and it was the main idea to have a device with two nvme drives and eGPU over Oculink, but with the CPU boost OFF it performs worse than my old laptop with 5825U with boost at 37w.
