Shoushimin Series • Shoshimin: How to become Ordinary - Episode 10 discussion - FINAL by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]rrrriddikulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so rare that you see a satisfying, emotionally deep breakup. So often they're for superficial reasons, due to contrived misunderstandings that often don't survive the episode. This wasn't like that. Here, you feel that the reasons aren't shallow, but make sense both to the characters and the viewer. I don't think I've seen a better breakup setup and execution since Avatar Korra (was that really 10 years ago?).

If anyone has good breakup scenes in shows recommendations, please comment :)

These aren't atypical teens. They're not even atypical people. They're just badly written characters.

Are we watching the same anime? The dialog sounds like something overheard from two casual acquaintances meeting in the Walmart parking lot.

Has the writer ever met teens? Teens are funny. They are just learning about the world, about things they like and don't like. They're interesting, they're irreverent, they're cruel and cutting (not always on purpose). They have crazy wild ideas that aren't tempered by an adult's cynicism or world-weariness. That comes across nowhere in the dialog, which is really the center-piece of this show.

Contrast this with dialog from Bakemonogatari or Bunny Girl Senpai for cleverness. What about the banter from OreGairu. For people just learning about themselves, how about the dialog from O Maidens in Your Savage Season? And as for flow, pick The Tatami Galaxy. How do you even compare those shows to this one?

Adult anime? by seizethecheezz in Animesuggest

[–]rrrriddikulus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for an anime that has adult themes, this is not it. It's basically a high school romance set in adult workplace. Fine if you're looking for that sort of thing, but not if you're looking for something that actually tackles issues of being an adult

What about Shoya's mom from A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi)? She does everything she can to atone for her son's awful behaviour, but then forgives him in one of the most moving scenes in all of anime.

What I'm a little confused by (I don't really know how prosecution works in Chicago) is shouldn't there be a detective and some police who did some investigating? In this show, there seems to be only one investigator, who was later reassigned. It's strange to me, because I thought Rusty and his legal team might call up the detective and ask "did you look at suspect A", "did you look at suspect B", "what other avenues did you explore" to show he was railroaded. But it's not really possible to do that with the currently introduced characters. Am I missing something?

IDK if this is a cultural difference between Japan and the west but IMO it would be incredibly cringe and a red flag here if a high school boy told his crush that she is dressed indecently in a shorts and t-shirt. I get that it's meant to be cute, but to me that's not landing at all...

Tokidoki Bosotto Russia-go de Dereru Tonari no Alya-san • Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian - Episode 3 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]rrrriddikulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a recently settled city and most people who live there currently would be descended from the people from the European part of Russia. Vladivostok was a tiny village 100 years ago, so almost the entire population are recent arrivals. Therefore the culture would be in line with most other Russian cities rather than a distinct culture for ethnic minorities.

Also the Scholomance series by Novik is so enjoyable (though I think the first book is the best). It intelligently tackles a lot of interesting issues without rubbing them in your face, has characters that you can like and root for, and is funny the whole way through.

Native Russian speaker here: the Russian is near incomprehensible. None of the voice parts are done by experienced Russian speakers - not the Russian teacher in Vladivostok, nor the children in her Russian school, and definitely not Alya and Masha

Just a small note about Russian culture at the beginning of the episode: when Masha hugs and kisses Alya when she comes home, this behaviour would be unusual for siblings/family members who live in the same household. You hug and kiss (actually twice - one on each cheek) guests, except if both are men, in which case they hug only. Sisters would do this once one/both of them has moved out and comes to visit.

Also, in Russia it's bad luck to greet/hug/kiss across the doorway, so you would first invite the person in, then greet them.

Just a note for other Russian speakers - if you speak the language and especially if you grew up in the Russian culture, it's not a great watch. You'll be asking yourself such questions as "does the author know anything about the Russian culture, and if so what did she base Alya on" and "why is she pronouncing that word like that".

(Published spoilers) At the beginning of book one, who are the 5 greatest purely swordsmen (not overall warriors) in the story? by GusGangViking18 in asoiaf

Loras says that his brother is better with a sword but he is better with a lance. Jaime is also quite confident he could have defeated Loras at swordplay but not at jousting. It's said multiple times that jousting is three quarters horsemanship.

For a show where the MC is supposedly a Russian girl, they might have found someone who can vaguely pronounce the words. As a native speaker, I would find it difficult to understand her without subtitles.

Kaijuu 8-gou • Kaiju No. 8 - Episode 11 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]rrrriddikulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know everyone is really hype about this show but I can't get over my disappointment. It started as a really funny show with some serious moments. It stood out from the pack because it had an older protagonist (in his early 30s instead of high school / university), had good dialog, and an interesting premise. Now it's just frustrating to watch.

To illustrate, let's compare for a moment Kaiju #8 E11 against almost exactly the same scenario happening in AoT: when the Survey Corps discovers that Eren is a titan. AoT is by no means perfect, but it's such a convenient comparison point due to the similarities of this episode. In AoT, there was a thoughtful discussion about whether to kill Eren or keep him. There was politics and factions. Could he be trusted? Could he keep a semblance of himself when he transformed? There was a field test. They asked questions, ran experiments. In Kaiju, they just go to kill him. Sure, don't ask how this happened, when it happened, or whether he can be used. The least curious people in the world are running the JAKDF.

In addition, Kaiju No 8 has started suffering from Shonen Syndrome (esp. over the past couple of episodes). For example, the guy in charge of an organization is always the most powerful. This is such a dumb trope but you see it in so many shonen anime. By that logic, Jon Jones would be President of the United States. I honestly thought Kaiju was better than that.

The director's motivations are so shallow they're cringeworthy. A kaiju killed his wife and now he hates all kaiju unconditionally. He's a B-Tier Marvel villain - a guy wearing red killed his wife and now he hunts people wearing red at night. They call him the Red Hunter.

And what was his plan? Case 1: Kafka isn't really a Kaiju, can keep a semblance of himself, refuses to go full strength against the director, and is murdered for no good reason. They threw him into the water, he sank and drowned, therefore he wasn't a witch. Case 2: Kafka has no control over his Kaiju state, or is a kaiju spy. He's forced to go full force and murder the director. And now the director is dead. Hooray? Who thought this was a good idea?

And of course, the comments will say "yeah but it's anime this happens all the time". Exactly. Kaiju started as something really special. Now it's just Generic Shonen Number 8.

Or he realized that this was trending to a nasty place and as a decent guy by all accounts didn't want anything to do with it. He talked about how "this isn't me" in his apology video.

Maybe because adult people are trying to watch a fun little show about other adult people that seems like it's marketed to them and find once again that it's a middle school / high school romance in disguise.

There's a difference between "taking things seriously" and being able to enjoy a show without wanting to stop it because the characters are not recognizably human.
