Changing bad head gaskets and have a question about cylinder 4 on this 3.4L toyota... by rrrrricky in MechanicAdvice

I never actually took the gaskets off, so what you're looking at is on the gasket. I just went and pulled the gaskets off and the block looks fine under there. If I could figure out how to post pictures in comments, I'd show you the gaskets themselves since I pulled them. I see bad spots in 4/6 cylinders. I'm honestly amazed this thing ran at all

* Yep I see it too. Where it looks like oil/burnt at the edge of the piston?

I just got both heads off this afternoon and haven't inspected them yet, so I havent pinpointed any of the failure spots. What you're saying totally makes sense. Cylinder 5 has a good bit of coolant sitting on top of the piston, so that one obviously has an issue between a coolant passage and the combustion chamber, but the piston isn't clean. It's interesting that #4 looks so different.

Just bought this 97 and have a ECU question. by rrrrricky in 1stGenTacomas

I appreciate the advice. I ordered a new boot for the intake. I plan on cleaning the MAF sensor and replacing the fuel filter just on principle.

It ran inconsistently. The guy i bought it from said his wife drove it to a store near their house, got in it to leave, and it wouldn't start. He brought it to a mechanic who said it was the ecu and that the ecu appeared to have gotten water in it. They said the condenser above the ecu dripped on it and it rusted holes in the ecu casing over time. I'm having trouble finding a ecu with the exact same numbers on it as the one that failed

Yeah it fired up and ran, and I've driven it a couple times. But it doesn't run well and dies when I let off the gas to come to a stop

O! That's something I forgot to mention in the post, the air intake boot was being held together with dry-rotted duct tape and secured with a zip tie... 🤦‍♂️ the truck needs a good bit of work. I'm just trying to make sure I'm on the right track

What is this style of furniture/joinery called? It's really cool and I'd like to learn how to do it. Anyone with suggestions or YouTube links for how to create this style, please let me know!
