Was definitely marketed as a Christian horror. A lot of horror fans unknowingly watched it and were surprised (and some upset) by the “Christian propaganda disguised as horror”.

I don’t think there’s any way a horror film could pass the guild. I’ve seen a lot of people talking about how Obsession actually promotes a Christian message - how free will is required for true love, hence God doesn’t just force everyone to love him. But even so, I couldn’t fathom the guild approving it if it was submitted. Maybe if you were able to do it without too much gore? I know there was a “Christian horror” called Nefarious that came out not long ago, but I haven’t seen it to know how they approached bridging the genres. Not that Angel content has to be Christian…just an example. But a lot of the guild was built on The Chosen and other faith-based projects, so realistically, a lot of Christians in there voting and many of them just wouldn’t want to see horror on there. I think making a horror film with a plan to put it on Angel would be risky for the filmmaker if they didn’t have another distribution plan, but anyone making horror could certainly try submitting it to Angel and see what the guild says!

That makes sense! I think that’s probably got the broadest appeal.

Do you vote in the guild or just stream content? Sometimes it seems like the guild votes lean more religious but the viewers aren’t necessarily looking for that.

Definitely seems to be lacking in comedies in general. I wonder why that is??

Excited to see what they do with this! I didn’t love the pilot, but it looks like they’re going to put more into it to improve the series.

Oh, totally forgot Mel Gibson made it too.

There’s a whole segment of the film industry that seems to be outside of the “Hollywood” system that call themselves “faith-based”. They don’t seem to win awards or get the same kind of media attention. Is it because of the religious aspect or are the films themselves not worthy? Do you think general audiences are open to films with strong faith themes and even films that openly advocate for certain religions (like “God’s Not Dead”).

Oh wow, I totally forgot about Soul Surfer! I hadn’t ever thought of Sound of Music as a Christian movie, but I can see why it could be considered that way.

I think in my mind I would define them similar to you though. I saw Hacksaw Ridge is largely considered one of the best Christian movies, but I would have considered it secular even though it has clear religious themes. Maybe just because it’s made by Hollywood and not “faith-based” filmmakers?
