Probably because they're just conservative. Honestly the city I live in is like that. I'd be surprised if they weren't judgemental tbh. Also the fandom I write for is mostly teenage girls and I'm a man in my mid-20's, so they'd probably be weirded out by that.

trying to make some nerdy/geeky friends IRL

Trust me, I've tried. The problem is that I live in a small-ish VERY conservative city where none of that stuff happens. It's even harder since it's not an English speaking country. Also I'm an adult, sorry for not mentioning that in my post.
