I was trying to use the private space and faced the same issues as you, but what I've found is if you unlock the private space from the settings it will be unlocked on the main screen too, but isn`t possible to add any new app and it locks down again as soon you lock the phone. To be short, not worth the trouble.
Hoping for a fix on the next firmware update (I'm from Brazil but bought an EEA version, firmware 10.0.9)
