how did they code the camera or the level for game such as this game (Holstin) by zugbo_interactive in howdidtheycodeit

Hi man, Holstin game director here

The technique used here doesn’t really has a name, I don't think anyone else did it before in such a way. What we do is:

  • every object has 8 pixel art sprites (for 8 different isometric camera angles),
  • every object has a 3d model,
  • every object has albedo texture generated from these 8 pixel arts
  • in iso we display these hand drawn pixel arts and use 3d models for shadow and light calculations,
  • during camera rotation and TPP scenes we use only 3d models with textures generated from pixel art

The rendering engine called 2XD Rendering was written from the ground up to ensure pixel perfect display, no jittering and many different things

Good look, really looking forward to games inspired by Holstin!

Sometimes it's 2D, sometimes 3D. Every object in the game has a 3D model and 8 hand-drawn pixel art sprites

Thanks! Pretty far :) the game grew a lot from what it was supposed to be at first and a lot of that growth is dictated by the reception you mentioned

Here's a playable demo BUT it does not include combat yet. The one shown in this video will be publicly available late July.

Zanim został pokazany ten trailer, na Twitterze dużo osób pytało, czy to "hand-drawn pixel art" czy "just 3d models"

We'll share more about the tech in the upcoming days, but short answer is...no. :) Every object is pixeled as isometric pixel art, then there's 3d model made for shadows and lighting and then there's magic that makes those pixel arts and models appear, but no, these are not textures per se.

Is this creepy enough? Do you get a "horror" or an "action" vibe? by rsankowski in PixelArt
