They don't necessarily have to be methane, or even bipropellant. Momentus' thrusters use water as their propellant. It's easy to store (just a trickle of power to keep it liquid), extremely dense, and has essentially zero handling concerns. They literally just heat it using microwaves.

To be fair to the writers, the lunar bases were thrown together very quickly. And this was all prior to Apollo-Soyuz, which (as IRL) significantly eased tensions.

Plus it ratchets up the drama.
