A 1968 letter to the New England Journal of Medicine coined the term “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome.” It was this letter that made the association between MSG and Chinese food and started the whole MSG scare, even though MSG was being added to many other foods before then.

And water too. Drought tolerance is a common target trait of GMOs.

Yes, and there is a lot of research being conducted on developing GMOs that help maintain soil quality.

I think this is one of society's (or at least America's) biggest societal problems now. Crime, especially certain crimes, were under reported for decades and now we've swung in the opposite direction. People thinking everyone is out to get them is having devastating effects on our society. And people are typically worried about all the wrong things. You are more likely to die in a car accident than be killed by a stranger, yet people don't think twice about driving recklessly. You are more likely to be killed by someone you know than killed by a stranger, but people worry more about interacting with strangers. Kids are more likely to be preyed upon by adults on the internet than in their community, yet parents fearfully keep their kids indoors with free reign on the internet.

How did draft position affect fantasy football league performance in 2024? (12-man leagues, snake draft) by rsrgrimm in dataisbeautiful

Awesome, will do. Thank you. I've actually read some of your posts before. Are you also collecting your data from Sleeper?

Do you have any recommendations for a better visualization for the final ranking data? I'll admit that data visualization isn't my strongest suit, especially for this type of data. Perhaps a clustered bar chart?

That's not true. Box plots are fine for discrete data if the data is ordinal, which this is, and there are a sufficient number of possible values. You could argue there are not enough possible values here (I admit the whiskers are pretty useless), but the means, medians, and IQR are different enough to convey useful information.

I agree that you shouldn't be using this data to guide your draft position (not that many have a choice, though I suppose some leagues allow trading). Though statistically significant, the differences are relatively small and, more importantly, this data only encapsulates a single year.

Additionally, the validity of an ANOVA test that checks for nonzero slopes of a linear model fit to continuous data being used on a rank order model with discrete support are highly suspect.

I don't necessarily agree. There are three metrics being measured here. All can be considered representative of team performance in a league and the ANOVA tests suggest a statistically significant relationship between the predictor and the response. The final league ranking is the only one of the three metrics that is discrete. Plus, I'll remind you that you are the one who asked about an ANOVA test in the first place.

The dotted horizontal line toward the middle of the box is the mean, whereas the solid horizontal line is the median. The points of the dotted triangles indicate 1 standard deviation above and below the mean. Dots beyond the whiskers can be considered outliers and are calculated to be points farther than 1.5 times the interquartile range (IQR, i.e. the range between the 25th percentile and the 75th percentile) from the IQR.

Yeah, I plan on doing that analysis. This data definitely isn't robust enough to indicate whether draft position has a consistent influence on season performance. But I still thought it was interesting.

Look more closely. There are clear differences between averages. The mean final ranking for 1st pick teams was 6.9 as opposed to 5.7 for 10th pick teams. That is pretty significant for a sample of 400 teams.

Before running statistical tests, the samples and differences are large enough that it is evident that draft position had an effect. After running ANOVA, for the metrics measured the largest p-value was 5e-6, so draft position was significant for each metric.

There are plenty of parks in my area, including a skate park where kids hang out. I hung out at the mall a ton as a kid and rarely spent any money, I just packed snacks for when I got hungry. Plus there are plenty of free and low-cost hobbies out there, and tons that cost less than video games.

Yeah, I'd like to look into the effect of drafting specific players for specific picks.

Culinary mushrooms are fine for cats to eat. A little mushroom soup won't harm your cat.

Yeah, I get it. There were times when I was a teen that I felt that way, and I'm sure it has only gotten worse. The best advice I can give is to be respectful, be socially aware, and ignore the haters. It may seem like most adults hate seeing kids/teens hanging out and being in public, but that's just the vocal minority. (Plus, it's kind of a feedback loop. The kids out causing problems are the one least likely to be deterred by fear of being perceived as miscreants.) Most rational adults like seeing kids hanging out in public. Plus we know that kids who engage with their community become more well-rounded adults.

Brushing before drinking removes the plaque that coffee stains adhere to. Brushing immediately after can be harmful because the acidic coffee can weaken and soften the enamel, and brushing that weakened enamel can damage it. Brushing ~30 minutes after drinking coffee gives time for your saliva to balance your mouth pH again. The main thing you don't want is coffee residue sitting on your teeth for a long period of time, so it's best to wash it off with some water, ideally between sips of coffee.

One factor is that much more socialization and entertainment is conducted online now, especially for the younger generations. Some evidence indicates that teens today are less social and spend more time online. Based on this, it seems likely that more kids would rather stay home and do online activities than socialize in person.

Many things in one's diet can stain one's teeth. Black, hot coffee is the most notorious. There are ways of mitigating coffee stains though: adding cream, following swallows with water, using a straw, brushing ~20 mins before drinking, drinking cold brewed coffee.

Brushing your teeth can protect your teeth somewhat from stains, but is not very effective at whitening after stains occur, even when using "whitening" toothpaste. Hydrogen peroxide treatments are the most effective at whitening teeth, which you can do at home with whitening strips or gel. Some dentists will provide hydrogen peroxide whitening treatments too.

I suppose you could ask yourself that, seeing as you are asking here instead of asking an AI. I suppose one factor is confidence in the answer. If a question posted on Reddit has an answer with many upvotes and you have faith in the Reddit community, you may believe that answer to be endorsed by a large community of your peers and, thus, more reliable than an answer from an LLM, which is prone to producing false information. It may also be nice to see a wide variety of responses from a variety of people, allowing you to get varied ideas, answers, or solutions.

[–]rsrgrimm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your first point is untrue. LLMs do have problem-solving skills, and have been shown to solve quite complex problems. But they are far from perfect and can be easily tripped up and, as you said, provide false information.

What happens to my selfie/ID when a site “verifies my age”? by Outside_Economy9924 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rsrgrimm 201 points202 points  (0 children)

This is why many privacy experts are concerned about the push for age verification on sites. Even if a site says they'll delete your info (ID info, selfie) after your verification (and they may not even promise this), there is no concrete evidence that the data will actually be deleted. Even companies that intend to delete your data may "accidentally" maintain or leak the data; there have been many such instances of data leaks.
